  • Yet another tech problem from the hell known as Poseidon's computer...

My computer will not turn on. At all. I booted in safe mode earlier, and it got me to the desktop, but when I try to get into windows normally, it won't let me. It'll get past the loading screen and I'll see my mouse, and then my comp will just shut off.

And it's been worse than that. I tried going into the BIOS and it just shut off on the main BIOS screen.

This all happened when I unplugged my speakers jack and tried to put in my other mic's jack. And I touched the metal apparentely with the jack (although i'm not really sure what happened) and then the computer right there just shut off. But isn't that supposed to not do anything?

This is FUBAR.

I'm hoping it's just overheating due to a lot of PC uptime, but it will just not turn on. I'm on my brother's computer right now and I'll give more updates as they come.

Help is appreciated.

Sounds like an electrical short.

Could have blown:

Power supply
Motherboard transistors
truly, anything electrical

Yeah but, I don't get how that could be so if it still goes to the loading screen and even past...and especially into safe mode.

Just doesn't make sense to me.

I tried it again, and safe mode works fine. It stays up, and all my components are working properly. Then I rebooted, and it just shuts down.

I'm really thinking this is just my PC overheating. I'll leave it off tonight and see what happens. If it doesn't work after that I'll have someone take a look at it.

I had a similar thing the other week, (I changed some of the audio jacks round and it shutdown) although I had been having some random shutdowns too, which I believe was due to a virus? I've formatted and been fine since...

I'm on my PC now in safe mode with networking. I don't get how it works like this but not in regular mode? I'm gonna try a virus scan and see what happens.

Yep, virus scan or take everything it out / dust it down, put it back in.

I have had my fair share of Power supply troubles, when they go bad, they do random things that don't make sense, trying to trick you into thinking it is something else.  They kind of have a connection, then you do something and boom, they loose that connection and it shuts off, sometimes it won't turn on at all when you hit the button, it all depends on how it is feeling, so my suggestion is try replacing your power supply first, get a cheap one at walmart or bestbuy and test it, then it is always nice to have an extra sitting around.

My vote is going with faulty power supply, possibly motherboard.

when's your last reformat?  if its been over a year, hell do that.  if you think its your temperature, go into bios and see what your temps are.  if you cant get into windows without safe mode dude, reformat.  sure reinstalling and patching bf2 is a pain but hey, thats what you gotta put up with computers.  this is why 2 hard drives is essential.  just have your windows on one hard drive while you save your patches, photos, etc. on the D: drive.  good luck.

It might be the PSU considering it boots into safe the, the time when the components need the least amount of power to function properly.

I would try reformatting and see what happens from there.  Make sure to back up all your data.

This same thing was happening to me. My computer would load up to a certain point, see mouse, even some desktop icons and then shut off. Same thing when I used safe mode. It turned out that it was the video drivers that I had updated. I had a computer pro fix it...i have basic knowledge, but he was able to get in and roll back the drivers. Don't ask me how he did it....I just know it was the new video drivers that kept shutting me down. That is just my experience..don't know if this will help.

I think it's PSU.

That does sound fucked up beyond all recognition.

I'd venture to check the PSU first. Seems to be the mist likely option.

When I try going into a virus scan, it goes for about 5 seconds and then my PC shuts off.

This computer isn't more than a month old, keep in mind weerdfoo1. And it was working absolutely fine until I tried taking out the speakers jack.

Fucked up beyond all recognition. Although in the case of Poseidon's computer, SNAFU would make just as much sense.

I meant repair in this case...but let's hope that's not true.

I tried Un-OC'ing it and putting everything back to default. Had a feeling for some odd reason the CPU was overheating because of it. Didn't work, unfortunately.

I really think it might be the PSU. Which would suck, because then I'd have to RMA it...Bah.

This looks very much like a PSU problem. Let me guess, you run Vista? If you do, it's likely that when the video card starts to do the heavy 3D accelleration in Vista, it uses much more power, and a too weak, defect or damaged PSU would force the computer to re-boot or lock up.
The idea of any hi-fi system is to reproduce the source material as faithfully as possible, and to deliberately add distortion to everything you hear (due to amplifier deficiencies) because it sounds 'nice' is simply not high fidelity. If that is what you want to hear then there is no problem with that, but by adding so much additional material (by way of harmonics and intermodulation) you have a tailored sound system, not a hi-fi. - Rod Elliot, ESP

So much for Thermaltake's good reputation...Now I have to go into my PC, take out alllll the plugs, and RMA it. This is gonna be fun.

Yeah, the only power supply I've ever had blow up on me was a Thermaltake. It actually made a black char mark on my wall behind the computer. But they're supposed to be good...

I now go with Antec, for the most part.

Trash it and start over if you have the money. Screw the time and effort it takes to narrow down a massive list of possible problems. Use it as an excuse to upgrade. Hooray money?

lol. And now I'm on my computer and it SEEMS to be working fine. Just watch it turn off. I'm gonna try counterstrike and see how it handles.

This kinda proves why I was etchy about it being the PSU in the first place, and it was just overheating. I dunno. Lemme see.
