Iraq has won the Asian Cup ..a major soccer tournament equivalent to the European Championship or Copa America.

"Iraq completed one of sport's great fairytales by beating Saudi Arabia 1-0 in the Asian Cup final on Sunday to provide a rare moment for celebration in their war-torn homeland."

The Iraqi national soccer team is comprised of Sunnis, Shias and Kurds and has been praised as being a unified symbol of the new Iraq. Although violence has not ceased and indeed many attacks have taken place around the celebrations the victory may go some way towards instilling a unified sense of pride in the war torn nation. In the same way that the newly unified Germany had won the 1990 world cup and went from strength to strength on the world stage hopefully the nation of Iraq can do the same.

Ouch. Against Saudi Arabia. That'll piss off the mainly Saudi Arabian insurgents in Iraq.

theyll go back to killing themselves tommorow i assure u,

in world war 1 in the trenches on christmas day they stopped fighting so that they could play a game of football and swap presents. The next day they went straight back to killing each other.

Its a nice thought to think that a football match could end a war but its not gonna happen

shame tho, taught those saudis a lesson or two on the football field lol

I saw something about this on News 24 early this morning, good on them for thowing aside the differences and working together for once, even though I can't stand soccer in the slightest.

Could it be possible that US intervention has ostensibly had a positive effect on another nation's soccer team?

...definition of irony anyone?

Yes.  We don't torture the losing team.  AKA Saddam.

Actually it was Uday Hussein who tortured the players when he was manager of the soccer team, he used to make them play with a concrete ball if they lost ...funny how that tactic never really worked in the long run!

This wont help dispshit.
After they won the semi finals, and they where all celebrating, there was also a suicide attack, killing somewhere around 50 people.

That kind of thing has been happening every day since the US first steamrolled in there in case you haven't noticed. This tournament win is a great boon for efforts towards attempting to dispel sectarianism and unite the nation, you think East and West Germany weren't a bit icy towards each other after the wall came down? These kind of things don't stop the violence but they can go a long way towards changing the mindset of the public.

I've a hard time believing this will make things better there.
You cannot compare East and West Germany with Iraq. Totally different background.

I myself think Iraq is fucked ...the US have destroyed that country; the only solution sadly imo is the country being divided up along ethnic and religious lines, which will only come about after years of killing and bloodshed.

...but you never know, if the country is to ever stick together with any kind of national sense of unity things like this are needed and will help towards that.
