In the speech during a visit to Germany in September, the Pope appeared to endorse a view, contested by most Muslims, that Islam's followers spread their religion in its early days by violence.

They bloody well didn't spread it by violence. They had to fight to survive the tribal violence from Makkah - and then fought back to take the Ka'bah which was their place of most religious significance (Muhammad cleansed it of idols).
Sure, they beheaded traitors on their side for betraying Islam and let prisoners of war choose death or Islam - but that's how everyone worked in those times. Live with it.
