OK, so not really an urgent problem, because I have been dealing with it for a while now, but here it goes.
At some point, some how, I have managed to change the primary function when I click on a hard drive inside 'My Computer'.  When I double click on one, a new window opens with a search ready to perform.  When I right-click on a drive, the first, bold option is 'search' instead of 'open'.
This does not happen with any folders, only with my drives.  I would like it to simply open the drive, in the same window, nothing fancy.  I have been using shortcuts to folders or right-clicking on the drive an manually clicking 'open' for the time being.
I have looked through the 'tools > folder options' as well as 'view' menus as best as I think I can, so if you have any suggestions relating to those menus, please be more specific.
Don't get me started with 'Windows Help and Support Center'... lol ... I don't know why they even bother having that

Take a read here. I'm aware that is for "My Documents" but it should work with your drives too!

As far as I know, it will just revert them back to open them when you double click them, and not search! If it goes wrong you can always system restore

@Downy > I knew it was out there somewhere! I searched "search instead of open xp" in Google and the first result was a success. It seems to be a common problem, although how you do it I have no idea!

It does more than that. But none of it should be harmful.

Actually, no it's not odd. And the fix is actually really simple. It just requires a bit more understanding about the innards of Windows to know what's going on.

OK, here's what's doing:

The command 'regsvr32 /i shell32' instructs windows to re-register the shell32.dll com object. This causes the DllRegisterServer function of shell32.dll to be called, which then writes all the registry entries for all classes supported by shell32.

The drive Open command is supported by just one of those said classes.

Basically, it stops working when the registry becomes corruputed and the doing the 'regsvr32...' thing forces the correct information to be written back into the registry.

StyleXP broke mine.
That's the kind of thing that will do it. Stuff like Registry cleaners can screw it up too.
