I started up my PC today and everything was fine. Ok no it wasn't. It started up normally, with the Microsoft Windows XP loading screen. All was fine until the log in screen. When I reached that part of the startup the whole screen went black. I tryed a restart and nothing happened. SO now I am asking for your help. Is there anyhting I can do to get my PC back to normal.

And is it the monitor or the PC?

Thx Gooners

Strangly the same thing happened to me.  Try turning it all the way off.  This ended up working for me after a few times.  If that doesn't work, see if you can't start it up in safe mode and then completely restart it from there.

I had that too! The monitor would just stay black, and you couldn't get it working.
Just turn off your computer for half an hour, like completely shut it down, then try again.

Ill try that but what is worrying me is that last night I turned off my PC as I went down to sleep  SO it hasn't been turned on since about 11:00 last night. and I tried to turn it on at about 10:30 and this problem occurred. I'm quite sure my computer has had enough time to rest

Try starting in safe mode like Bolvis said, then right click on My Computer-->Properties-->Hardware-->Device Manager--> right click and un-install video drivers.

Or you may have to do it through msconfig while in safe mode.

Anyways, if it will boot into safe mode, you know it's the drivers. If not, um.. could be hardware

I've tried that the monitor stays black after it has went in standby mode.. I just turned of the computer, turned of the power to the computer, and waited 10 min.
Then it worked again.

If you can get into safemode with networking, download your video drivers again and re-install them.

Do you have onboard video?

Edit: as in, maybe try connecting the monitor to your onboard adapter for testing

if your computer has on-board video, uninstall that while in safe mode. windows automatically puts out the load screen to all video adapters, but everything after that to the primary only. had this issue when reformatting a computer for a client...took me two re-installs before i figured out what the issue was.

you should just be able to go into device manager and disable/uninstall onboard video drivers.

this is, of course, assuming that your mobo has onboard to begin with.

If you have onboard graphics...take out your GFX and try again.

If not...well, I have no idea. All the suggestions have been suggested.

Sorry, that was poorly worded.

Click on Device Manager (button), then find your graphics drivers section. (then right click and select un-install on everything under the drop down about graphics). Then reboot. Then reinsall your divers after you're back up and running in normal mode.

Downy's way seems easier and faster than a full virus scan.

It takes me 30 minutes each day, to start up my monitor, it always goes black, until it has warmed up enough to start up without fading, i think that the procceser chip inside it is just dying or something

Gooners, how long did you wait before you turned your computer back on?
What I did was completely shut it off (power bar and everything) and then came back like 20 minutes later and it worked.
