After reading the article and watching a few videos...

I'm changing my stance 180 degrees.

If anything, this guy is a role model.  Doing what he loved, not letting anyone tell him otherwise, dying happy.  We should all be so fortunate.

Wow, well that's a new way of putting it bluntly, of course I'm doing that here at my PLC because we don't have the time for being nice all the time.   Sorry for his daughter and family, he died happy though, doing what he wanted.

There are not many old solo climbers in the world. Solo climbers and 8000meters alpinist all die young except Reinhold Messner. Nature has no mercy and You can't be lucky all the time.
That being said everybody is free to do what they want, and climbing is great fun and shit scary.

I don't mean to sound like a jerk, but ATG, calling this guy a dumbass probably just goaded him to continue in a small way.

Think about it...  This guy defied death for a living, so he probably heard things like you what you wrote on a daily basis.  Hell, his wife probably even told him that kind of thing a few times.

Some people just live to narrowly dodge death.  Their logic works differently from me or you, because they like the rush they get from it.  Granted, I've rarely experienced that kind of thing, and I can't say I liked it too much.
