I believe the OEM version (system builders) is intended to be used on one machine only, and the other can be used on mult machines in your home? I think thats correct. I have OEM vista home premium, uninstalled due to poor driver support, works fine though!

The OEM (system builders) is basically just the disc and a key.

Retail has the box, instructions and all that other stuff, just buy the system builders one   You can get vista ultimate OEM for the same prices as retail basic I think am right in saying

Poor driver support? You must have a pretty old computer to say that.
I have had no problems with Vista. Ever.

Just buy the OEM, Bell is correct.

Specs are in sig nub. My machine is pretty damn good. When i got vista back in Jan i believe there was no SLi support for DX9 cards, so i unitsalled it.  No need for it now becuase i dont have a DX10 card and there are hardly any DX10 games out worth playing. Its waiting for my 8800gtx and two more gigs of ram in November. Then i will reinstall.

You could just use it. It's better, safer, nicer and easier.

OEM is tied to the machine that is is first installed on and Microsoft does not supply support for it. Support should be provided by the OEM.

Retail allows you to move it to another machine if you require. It can only be installed on one machine at a time.

People have had success moving the OEM version by phoning the activation line and telling the it's a warranty replacement motherboard etc. Fost people the OEM is just fine and you could have bought 3 copies for the same price as the retail.

Strictly speaking, OEM should only be sold with hardware and is tied to that hardware.

But nobody takes any notice of any of that.

The software is identical.

You'll just get a fancy curvy box, a (probably rubbish) manual and some bumpf with the retail version.

This is enforced via activations ... say you do a number of upgrades that break the activation (i.e. video card and new optical drives) .. you cannot reactivate with a hardware configuration different form that which you started. So this is fine if you do not plan on doing any moderate upgrading beyond system creation.

I love the new OS. I waited until a couple weeks ago to install it, holding back all this time because of all the negativity that I heard regarding Vista.  All I can say is that I wish I had gotten it sooner.
