Friday's Gregalogue: THEY MEAN WELL

A lot of people talk about media bias - the idea that reporters from the New York Times to CBS lean left, as if they suffer from chronic political scoliosis. I have an alternative, and some might say brilliant theory - and that is the MSM is biased, but they don't just lean to the left, they lean towards any belief or idea that quote unquote means well.

It makes sense. People have a common need to mean well. It explains charities, floral arrangements, greeting cards signed from all of us and sneeze guards at the salad bar, which incidentally, never stop me because its very easy to slip your head under them and pretend you're trying to get a closer look at the lettuce.

Now, I know what you're thinking. You're thinking that as an American, you have a God given right to pristine croƻtons. But meaning well should not trump honesty.Think about all the issues treated with kid gloves. The press, for example, never questions the statistics they repeat on the homeless, because just reporting them, even if they're exaggerated, means you mean well. The press rarely questions the validity of climate change science, because scientists who exaggerate panic, only mean well.

Conversely, people who are skeptical of global warming don't care about the planet. And anyone evil enough to support the evil war in Iraq, certainly doesnt mean well - they probably touch themselves while listening to Yanni, feasting on field voles and reading about casualties.

And this is the hilarious irony of contemporary life: people who mean well are by far the most potentially destructive element in society - because they'd rather "feel good," than "do good." In order to do good, you've got to face some sober facts, ones which dont make you feel good, no matter how many roles of biodegradable toilet paper you donate to the homeless annually, or how many donut sales for needy orphans you attend in my basement.

So maybe the media is biased, but don't blame them. They mean well.

AND THAT'S MY GUT FEELING.

I'm far too cynical to believe that the media or humanity in general "means well."

Most of us only mean well to the extrent that it benefits ourselves.

This guy obviously spends too much time thinking with his gut rather than his mind.

Was this supposed to convince me of anything?

I'd say he's biased towards conservatives. But he means well.

lol "The Daily Gut" - sounds like a satirical website written by Stephen Colbert.

The problem is they dont mean well. They only appear to mean well when it coincides with their own interests. The political structure imposed on Iraq is a joke - its falling apart. The neo-cons were foolish to believe otherwise. "Meaning well" my ringpiece...
