Reading these forums for some time, I learned that many Americans fear a social security system covering the needs of everyone.  People need to take care of themselves is the phrase of the day.  I never understood that, but let's take a look at France.

Everyone working in France must contribute to the French Social Security system and everyone (French or not, working or not, unemployed, child or retired, legal or illegal immigrant) is entitled to benefit from it with no exception (with CMU : Couverture Maladie Universelle only 0,1% are not covered).  The system is threefold : Health, Family and Retirement, each of them has different structures and financing ; each of them is financially autonomous (no taxpayer's money but contributions by employers and employees to make it balanced).  And it works for everyone.

Despite this "preposterous system", they still can enjoy 100Mbps broadband connections for a bunch of Euros.  France, How dare you?

That is pretty awesome. My 10m/bit connection is 50 euro's per month, and it doesn't include phone or TV services.

Well, there's OC192 which is like 9.2Gbps, but that's used on things like internet backbone servers.

Japan has very fast internet too, deployed in almost all of its more modern areas. The problem with this happening in the US is

1) The idiotic telcos and other providers

2) The US is huge compared to most countries, it's hard to deploy super fast internet to the entire US or even half of it
