It's highly commendable and I would expect nothing less from decent American troops. It's just a futile shame they ever had to go out there to wound people, and be wounded themselves, in the first place.FEOS wrote:

You're right, it is a shame that anyone anywhere in the world has to wound or be wounded. I don't think anyone would disagree with that...at least no one in the US armed forces that I know.

As most of you know I am now in Iraq and I have a story to convey to you.
Last night while at work my friend and co-worker smashed his finger. Bad enough to warrant a trip to the medic station. He was taken by another friend and co-worker. They had been gone longer than we had expected and was starting to wonder. When they got back from being patched up. They told us they were late because they had some causalities that were on there way in from near by fighting, that of course took priority over them.
They heard the DUST-OFF land outside the station and were forced aside as a gurney was rushed past them with a man soaked in blood was put on the table and the medical staff swarmed around him. Doctors hastily barking orders and medics running around carrying those orders out. All for the intent of desperately trying to save this mans life. They left the station before knowing if all of those doctors and medics efforts were successful. So I can not tell you if the man lived or not.
The only reason I share this story with you is because the man on the table was an Iraqi insurgent recently wounded in a fire fight with an Apache. The soldiers in the field that found this insurgent called in the wounded, probably stabilized him as best they could until the helicopter arrived. The helicopter that picked him up and flew him to the medical station was a Blackhawk medivac chopper. You could have never known by the efforts put forth to save this mans life that he was the enemy. The only reason I tell you this story is because you would have never heard it otherwise. I have always been proud to American, but especially today.
i posted this a few months ago, but i don't think many of you were able to see it.
like you said, the story didn't make front page news, that's for sure.

I've heard .
Helicopter gunships from Multi-National Division - Center fire on insurgents, who surrender after their compound is attacked. Coalition medical personnel were called in to aid four wounded enemy fighters.
U.S. troops during a routine search operation find an Iraqi kidnap victim handcuffed in a terrorist hideout. Soldiers and a translator immediately tell the man's family that he is alive and well.
And the insurgents wonder why the locals are turning on them...

I wanna say I appreciate all the positive responses to this thread. I just felt so proud of our guys and our Army that, regardless of how they are portrayed on the nightly news, our troops value life, even the lives of our enemies. I dunno, I guess I always knew that. It was just good to hear.
the Tigris river is to the east of where your at, right across the street from the gate, like RIGHT across the street. Only its on the Iraqi side of taji, so youre a few kilometers away. Im almost certain I know which pad your at. Without risking OPSEC, you work with aviation right?lowing wrote:

actually it's a part of the geneva convention that the doctors got to heal hostile and friendly also even though the one of you own soldiers are hurt you must heal the most badly hurt even through it might be a hostile over a friendly.nonexistentusmc wrote:

actually thats not entirely true. enemy combatants, regardless of their injury are the second or third priority (if I recall correctly)motherdear wrote:

1st -Friendlies
2nd -Enemy
3rd-non combatants
seems fucked up to treat non combatants last but think of it this way. If information collected from that wounded enemy soldier helps stop future battles, then its a win/win situation (except for all the people that died already)
now if a friendly gets a recieves a moderate injury and an enemy recieves a critical, friendly recieves priority. If the friendly recieves a light wound, otherwise known as "walking wounded" (there are a few more terms) then the enemy combatant who is critical has priority.

Anyway, that was some nice reading (Lowings OP and a few other posts). I too don't like it that the media only report on the bad things. I guess, that's because the good things probably happen more often than the bad. For example, I know it's abit sad, but i'll talk about Soldier deaths. Before there used to be huge articles on every soldier death, from US to Iraqi Civilians to UK. Now they're restricted to the basic details of the death and the soldier. The media works like that. I hate it, they don't report the news they report things to get ratings, eg: The Madeliene case, who gives a fuck about One girl lost to negligence when thousands are dying somewhere else.
That is why I enjoy reading the real stories from guys that have been to Iraq and try not to read about Iraq in the news, the whole thing makes me confused though. But I really don't fucking like how the Media prioritise things.

And lowing, I believe you bro, but feel like posting a pic of you holding a sign saying 'Hi BF2s D&ST' somewhere interesting in Iraq? Just for fun of course.
I wonder lowing, have they gotten rid of any reference to TF 39 BCT or the 1st Cavalry division during OIF II. We really built that place up. I know there were a few murals of the CAV around there. It would be nice to know if they kept our image there with all the units passing through

I've seen the information that went with this video originally, the soldier who got shot in the video managed to find and shoot the sniper and then he helped him with medical aid.

Yeah, over here working aviation, but our pad is right behind the PX. The MWR is acroos the street and in front of the PX, we are behind it. By the way the Haji "Bizzar" in the PX compound burnt to the ground about 2 weeks ago. Dunno if any of that was up and running when you were here., but caught fire and went up in flames. Stood outside the hooch and watched it burn.
Yeah, there is a rusty water tower ( or whatever) with murals of 1 cav and someone else I did bother to identify, then it says something about OIF1 and OIF2 on it, with some dates. I ride past it almost everyday going to the gym but I don't remember what it says. I would post pictures on here but I am afraid of violating OPSEC. I have asked about shit I have sent home but not about posting pics for the whole world to view. What would be the general rule of thumb for that? I will ask tomorrow about it. I never was gunna bother, but now my integrity is in question. lol.GunSlinger OIF II wrote:

Anyway, they are starting to go crazy with the murals around here. I guess every unit has got their own artists huh??
no shit????? wow. I remember when they built that one to replace the half a dozen or so that were spread all along the base. It was a big deal for the FOB. It was built a few weeks before that big ass difac youre probably eating in, along with the walma...PX and the subway/burger king/pizza hut food court. My trailer was the very first one north that you see walking north from the PX compound, right in the corner of the pad. the god damn motor pool was 1 mile away and I had to walk that shit full battle rattle at least 8 or 9 times a day sometimes just to get ready to go out on patrol. thats some shit about that haji shop, but even the fact that you refer to it as the bizzar proves that you are most definately there. Thats not something you could learn to call it by on google, as i recall, there was a sign that said that right?lowing wrote:
