I could tell you some interesting things about that FOB and what it was before we showed up if you wanna know.  Give you a hint, stay away from those vast pools of still water that seem to form out of nowhere.  at least there were a lot of those when i was there.
Yeah, no shit, what the are those pools all about???

Yeah, over here working aviation, but our pad is right behind the PX. The MWR is acroos the street and in front of the PX, we are behind it. I wonder lowing, have they gotten rid of any reference to TF 39 BCT or the 1st Cavalry division during OIF II.  We really built that place up.  I know there were a few murals of the CAV around there.  It would be nice to know if they kept our image there with all the units passing through
Yeah, there is a rusty water tower ( or whatever) with murals of 1 cav and someone else I did bother to identify, then it says something about OIF1 and OIF2 on it, with some dates. I ride past it almost everyday going to the gym but I don't remember what it says. I would post pictures on here but I am afraid of violating OPSEC. I have asked about shit I have sent home but not about posting pics for the whole world to view. What would be the general rule of thumb for that? I will ask tomorrow about it. I never was gunna bother, but now my integrity is in question. lol.

Anyway, they are starting to go crazy with the murals around here. I guess every unit has got their own artists huh??
as long as you dont show the area where you work at or anything showing unit names or designations.  When you think about it, anything that local contractors or KBR support personell are exposed to, Im pretty sure would be OK.  I mean we had Iraqi teenagers helping us with Bradley maintenance.  Just be careful about showing where you work at specifically.  Im pretty sure a lot of the stuff you work with, especially helicopter aviation, you are required to have at least a 'secret' security clearence.  But pics of the FOB would be fine I think.

Thats one of the reasons why i took down that thread where I recieved so much karma on, I didnt wanna risk showing too many pictures with areas or personnel.

well.....hmmmm, ok

Taji is more than just some insignificant little are 27 klicks north of Baghdad.  During the Baath era, Taji was home to one of the busiest, (if not, the) most important airfields in the Iraqi military.  Not only that, It housed a division of special republican guard.  Not only that, it was the headquarters of Iraqi Armored Training.  All Iraqi army tanks had to go through Taji at least once in their short lifetimes for refurbishes and repairs.  its like our Ft Knox.  Thats why you might or might not see that giant Iraqi graveyard of dead armored and engineer vehicles (home of an engineer brigade too, you see a lot of pontoon bridges and rafts just hanging on the side of the road unused in years and worthless. again, I dont how much exposure you have towards those area lowing since they are closer to the wire)

But, the most important thing about Taji is the fact that for a period of time it was home the iraqi NBC Program.  Nuclear, Biological and Chemical weapons.  Now the town of Taji is reall shitty.  Its a small village where the majority of homes are mud brick.  The airfield is outside Taji with a bunch of other smaller villages.  The most significant town in the area though, and the cause for this post really is a place called Tarmiya.  Bad, Bad, Bad place.

Holy shit, thinking about that place now I get goosebumps being reminded of the first time I went through that town.  Fucking awesome man,  everyone started to go inside the second they saw us coming.  Businesses and soda stands went inside and what was a huge crowd in the middle of the day quickly dispersed and dissappeared in a matter of 10 minutes.  It was like an old western shootout.  You could have heard a cricket.  and then BOOM! Rpg, Small arms and mortars all rolled into one.  But we had Kiowas (in my opinion the wildest, most daring helicopter pilot there is...many a time a Kiowa went to a hotzone where an Apache pilot was too afraid to go alone) but it was short and sweet and they all missed.  Within ten minutes, we capture 4 assholes and find a huge cache of rockets and mortars. The way we capture em though was like the scenes out of a movie.  We asked if they had weapons, they said no.  We searched, nothing came up.  Then my LT decided to check some sacks of rice (or flour, or barley whatever it was) and as he was cutting them up, thats where we found the contraband.  thing is this house (it was in the basement actually) had about 50 sacks of rice stacked on one and another and our commander didnt wanna hang around for another ambush. I was on the comms and I hear the kiowa pilots request permission to demolish the house with rockets by asking our battalion commander on the ground, who was with us this mission.  He said, and this stuck out in my head, "Thats a negative, there some lady's house who right next door and all these munitions will just destroy her home too, well have to leave those sacks there and just take these guys in"  I mean cmon, if that doesnt say we give a fuck about the regular Iraqi civilian, what does?

oh yeah, and all this was on my very first patrol outside the wire. I was in country for about 3 days.

Sorry for going off on a tangent,  I figured that annecdote might support your OP.  But anyways. Taji.  Tarmiya.  The significance of the area is this:  Remember when Secretary Powell was pleading the case of the United States for the invasion of Iraq to the UN?  Remember those trailers he said were mobile whatever the fuck, chemical weapons labs or something?  Those trailers were in Tarmiya.  Iraq's WMD program was HQed in Taji Airfield with all the smarty arty rocket scientist and chemical specialists living in Tarmiya, a Baathist haven.

Damn I wanna share more of these fucking Iraq memories before they fade away.

Between this and the fact that I have had some down time from work is the reason I have been on so much. Nothing to do here except eat, sleep work out and internet. It ain't like I am gunna catch a cab and go sight seeing. Although that is ashame, I guess the Tigris and the Euphrates is just beyond the base. Would be cool to say I have seen it. LOL, although I guess if I am gunna take the time and effort to lie about Iraq I might as well through seeing the Tigris and Euphrates in the lie as well.

Morale, Welfare and Recreation = MWR

a place where soldiers or civilians working for the government could go and rent a dvd or video game or board game or internet or whatever. You sign in and have a certain amount of time to use the phones or internet or video game or whatever.  Taji has a few.

PX = Post Exchange

a store.  they sell a little bit of everything. in the navy and marines its called an NX or BX, Navy Exchange or Base Exchange.  A company called AAFES runs it (Army and Airforce Exchange Service) for the AF and Army  The one is Taji is pretty big.  Not as nice as the one in Camp Victory (Liberty now)

The one here in Taji has everything you need, as long as all you need is cigarettes, weed eater string, dog and cat repellent, 10 speed racing bikes, oh and thick bomber jackets with "Camp Taji" written on them. Did I mention that last week we had a heat index of 138 frickin' degrees and there ain't a smooth piece of road here suitable for a racing bike?

But if you are picky and hard to please or just want to be difficult, the Taji PX will constantly run outta everything else.

yup right there.  my trailer was the the one across the very corner facing the PX.  That same area was mortared and a soldier died there the day that we arrived.  Turns out they had guys in the FOB plotting grids with magellans on the brand new trailers that they knew were going to be freshly occupied for the mortar/rocket attack that followed.

After receiving treatment, I think maybe that insurgent will think twice about attacking us next time.  Thats what its all about, isnt it?  Winning the hearts and minds.

I dont fully support the war, but everyday I'm begining to grow more and more skeptical about the medias coverage of the war.  Instead of providing an unbiased report and letting viewers decide their own opinion, assholes like Brian Williams will suddenly act depressed and sad whenever the word "Iraq" or "middle east" is mentioned.  Its all BS.  They know the public, for the most part, is against the war, so suddenly they act anti-war as well, so years from now, people will look back and say "NBC news was on our side all along".

Its just a popularity contest, really.  The mainstream news only exists to tell people what they want to hear.  If we were fighting a more popular war, the news would be filled of stories of us treating enemy combatants in aid stations.

Close, it is the Mayor's Cell.

We had a rocket hit about 60 yards from us in the lot between us and the Warrior Chapel ( if ya remember it). Sent our asses running for the bunkers, scared the evern livin' shit outta us.
