Bit of confucious there.

My understanding was with backward compatibility, you could plug PCIe1 cards into PCIe2, not the other way round.
Oh damn... he's right.
My bad!

Yeah that sounds right.

Wikipedia wrote:

PCIe 2.0 is still compatible with PCIe 1.1, so older cards will still be able to work in machines with this new version.
On the topic, they've now started talking about PCI-e 3... the speed at which technology moves!

So we will need to buy new mobo's to make the most of it then

I am getting very confused as to all these new parts, I have heard about X38 which will have PCI-e 2.0, and obv support for 45nm CPU's.  Then theres Nvidia 7 series mobo's.  Then going on to AMD, wtf is the difference between barcelona and phenom!!!!?  I read, X2, X4, and then shit about K8 and K10, continuety anyone!?

I suppose the one thing I can take from this is I wont be buying parts again for a little while yet

Agreed. I have absolutely NO clue about what AMD is developing. K8 / K10 / Phenom / Barcelona / Star Series / Agena / Kuma / Budapest....

But i understand the rest. X38 is a new Intel chipset to support PCIe 2 and DDR3. Next gen processors (eg Penryn) will be 45nm. Nvidia 7 series chipset is for the new AMD processors (pick one from the list above!)

That is pretty amazing, actually. Prices better be good though Although they have been in the past!

Yeh i know... why are Nvidia focusing their new chipset on AMD/ATI. Not only are AMD crap, but they're also ATI which is their competition?!

Money for low end boards. AMD is going for the budget boy run while intel goes with the performance run.

Doesn't Intel control the office/lower segment with their Celeron and Core Solo cpu's?

I'm getting the impression that AMD is purely for fanboys nowadays.

Yeah but it does not ive up to the cheap dual cores you know?

Sort of off-topic, but I wish CPUs names made more sense. This mix'n'match geography (etc.) shit's got to go. As of now, long gone are the days that you could tell what the heck you were looking at without having absorbed a technology chart off of an online PDF file. Damn marketers...shooting themselves in the foot.

I thought the Penryn CPUs were for laptops. Isn't it the Wolfdale for desktops?

Why does everyone call them Penryn, when they're just for laptops? It should be Wolfdale or Yorkfield.

Probably because all these tech sites (atleast the ones I look at) seem to of attached to calling it penryn, least when they call it that everyone knows what chips there on about.  I never knew what the hell yorkfield was untill you yourself Bertser mentioned it a while back and I had a look

Penryn = Dual Core, Wolfdale = Quad core

At least that's what I'm thinking.

Maybe I'm having a brainfart, but isn't Penryn the sequel to Merom? I thought the desktop equivalent was Wolfdale. I guess we can blame sources such as vr-zone and theinquirer for latching onto names early on.

As for Core 2 Quad, I agree that it's a misnomer. Looking at it as an outsider, you'd figure it was an 8-core CPU solution, via multiplication...
No, you are very right. But i think its the same in that Core was originally designed for notebooks. But year, desktop Penyrn = Wolfdale.

Penryn = Laptop. Woldfale = Dual Core Dekstop. Yorkfield = Quad Core Dekstop.

The successor to the Merom core currently used for the Core 2 Duo T5000/T7000 series mobile processors, code-named Penryn, will debut the 45 nanometer process that will also be used for the Conroe sequel, Wolfdale (see below)...

Wolfdale will be the desktop version of Penryn, with two cores sharing 6 MiB of L2 cache and 1333 MHz FSB. Two Wolfdale dies on a single module will make up a Yorkfield chip, the successor to the Kentsfield processor

so would buying a E6750 and P35 motherboard be a bad idea now if i cant afford to upgrade again for 6 months?

Wouldnt say its a 'bad' idea, right now that is one of the better set-ups you can get atm, but, since we are coming up to a change over, perhaps it be best to wait
