I post this in the Junk Drawer but it's kind of serious.
I've often though and have done for a while, that "Games" is almost a derogatory term for what they actually are. With things like Battlefield 2 and Counter-Strike I can see where the term "game" comes in, but realistically computer games are so much more than just games. For instance, games now all have incredible graphics and physics, essentially reconstructing the physical world with lines of code. That's bloody impressive! The graphics point covers all recently released games, yet reconstructing the world on a screen isn't enough to truly differentiate between games and... well whatever the rest are. Battlefield 2 for example would be considered a game, round after round of just shooting the other guy. Multiplayer games then, can perhaps be seen as games.

Yet what about the others? Right now we're holding out and saving pennies for upgrades for the next generation titles which look oh-so-cool. Crysis and Call of Duty 4 among others. These 'games' are indeed more than just games, Hell they're more like movies, the only difference is that you take the movie at your own pace and actually are a part of the story. One so-called 'game' that I'm looking forward to in the probably distant future is "Alan Wake", you've probably heard of it, it's the one with the insane graphics. This is a psychological thriller with a storyline so intricate that Hollywood wouldn't have a chance of portraying it. How can this be considered a meer game?

Computer games has come a long way from Pacman and Snake and although some still have very two-dimensional tasks and consequences, others tell stories more interesting and better formatted than at least 80% of films. They take longer to make as developers need to recreate the world; I mean things like re-creating how light behaves and setting how heavy different items are still blows my mind. Developers also have opportunity that film makers don't by adding more detail into the story because they don't have the pressure of fitting everything into three hours. The word "game" when applied to some of these masterpieces just doesn't say it at all. My parents for example do not understand how complicated and how much work is put into them and probably because this type of interactive computer software is still dubbed "game" for simplicity's sake. It does require an appreciation of what is actually being created to find value in things that are deemed playthings by many people.

yeah, it's pretty amazing how far the they have come and how fast the technology developes.

I remember buying BF2 and thinking "Holy SHIT! THese graphics are crazy!". Now it's more like, meh, just another game.

The future games are turning more and more into interactive movies. Who knows? Maybe, in the future, we will all be participating in the movies when going to the cinema.

I know what you mean Ty, my mother hates computers. She has an unhealthy vendetta against them, possibly because she thinks me and my brother should spend less time on them and sees them as a big waste of our lives.

I personally prefer calling most online games (like CS) E-sports and sometimes sports. I was talking to a few relatives and I was telling them about a competition I would have won and flew to Taiwan to compete for $40 000 if I was old enough ( ) She was dumbfounded that 'games' are at such a level, that you can win huge amounts of money. Now whenever we meet up she always asks how my clan matches were, what position my team is on the ladder, just like a relative would ask about football or soccer.

And she spent so much time tryin to keep them as a child and now they want to throw computers away....

I think that you are coming from a wierd direction, i think games refer to a state of inputing commands to an interactive system that poses a challenge to the user and its not about what people are actually sitting down and playing.

But i see where you are coming from, i think its a bit premature, people will pick up on it soon and there probs will be an official title.

Nice post Ty.

I would have to agree, games nowadays are pretty impressive and really do a good job of engrossing the player. Square and the Final Fantasy series have been doing this for quite awhile. No other series has been so consistent with amazing storylines, cutting edge graphics, and insanely good soundtracks. Also, the Zelda series has been doing something similar. I don't know if I've ever been more emotionally invested in a game than Ocarina of Time. That game sent shivers up my spine with how good it was. Oblivion is obvious for various reasons.

This isn't just restricted to RPG's though. For example, Max Payne was one hell of a FPS. Especially the nightmare levels. If that wasn't artistically done, I don't know what is. The Resistance FOM storyline was also dynamic and well done. There are many more that I haven't mentioned.

I hear what youre saying, but they're games to me. Maybe social events, its good to chat while playing. Its generally a common interest you share when you are playing these games so you can sometimes meet people, that you otherwise, have nothing in common with and would probably never say two words to if you met them in a different situation.

I think you could easily cut bits of Gears of War together and pass it off as a movie.

What I hate the most is that most people who haven't played games (or played them as a hobby) still see video games as in general as running around with a laser gun, shooting aliens and going through the games in numbered levels and fighting bosses.  Like you said, video games are becoming more and more immersive, creative, and enjoyable every year.

Like you said, most people would consider BF2 a game.  But I dont think of it that way.  I think of it as a kind of military simulation for casual people... kinda like a virtual airsoft or paintball game, except its more extensive and realistic (in terms of weapons, locations, etc.).  Thats whats so fun about games... you can have fun role playing without actually being the thing in the game.  EVERY game involves role playing... its not just RPGs.  In BF2 you're  playing as a soldier, but in a casual way.

I play in S-3D. That means my eyes get 2 different images of the gameworld so I see it in 3D like the real world.
