I installed the Firmeware crap from the samsung website thinking it might help me, but still I can't open burned disc with data on them, I can play a burned DVD, but I had to find a Mpeg2 decoder but even still I doesn't play sound.. WMP11

How do I get my DVD Burner to open up a DVD data disk?
I can't get the shit I saved to disc, put back on my computer.
All my shit is brand new, but I don't have anything like Nero or any burn software installed.
Do I need burn software to read a data disc?
I put a disc in and it just sits there frozen up, can even go to internet explorer when it's doing this.
Hard drive light is on like it wants to do something but nothing happens. never had a problems liek this before, dvd player shoudl read any disc with data on it right? I burned the data DVD with a laptop running Vista and used the Microsoft default burn program, not from my computer.

Also, does anyone know where I can get a mpeg2 decoder for windows media player 11 or anything else? I can't play my copied DVD's without it? not even my TV recordings...

The problem could be bad discs, or a bad drive.  Can you test the discs in another computer?  Can you read retail data DVD discs (game DVDs etc)?  Were the discs made with any special backup software (shouldn't really cause your problem, but may help troubleshoot)?  If you can't read any data DVD at all, even after verifying the disc is good in another PC, the drive is probably toast.  30-50 bucks will fix it.

For the DVD problem, you can try VLC (www.videolan.org) or mplayer (http://www3.mplayerhq.hu/MPlayer/releas … 1.0rc1.zip)to verify you can play the discs at all.  These apps are small, and they don't need additional codecs to play DVDs, so it's a quick/easy thing to try.  If you built your PC, did you not get a disc with the DVD drive that had DVD software (powerDVD or some such program)?  If you did, that software should install all the codecs you need for wmp11 to play DVDs with video and audio.  If not,  and you don't like either app mentioned above, you can look for most any DVD video application from friends or elsewhere, or perhaps try finding your codecs at a place like www.free-codecs.com.

Good luck!

I had problems with my Philips DVD Burner, but a firmware update fixed that.  Is the data compressed files and you don't have a WinRAR or whatever unzip program you use installed? Does your sound work on other things?
