The reaction has been huge. The song shot to No. 1 in Pakistan. And thanks to the Web, it's gone global. There have been 65,000 downloads thus far.
Moderate Muslims sing!

Via INDC Bill. It’s off the radar screen in the U.S. but a big deal where it desperately needs to be a big deal. Think of it as a Pakistani “We Are The World”: treacly, brimming with celebrities, incapable of solving the crisis it’s addressing, but a welcome step in the right direction. Signal jamming, if you will.

Socially conscious pop makes Osama cry.

The video has now been released in the U.K. with subtitles. The U.K., like Pakistan, is no stranger to terrorism. Officials in the two countries think the song is great.

.......................................https://i11.tinypic.com/66nhx1e.jpg

Others aren’t as thrilled. According to video creator Waseem, extremists here have criticized the song, saying it should target governments they claim are responsible for the terror … not the terrorists.

But that's the very twisted logic the song is trying to knock down.

We played the video to some young people in one British neighborhood and the reaction was uniformly positive. It seems that the Mahmoods have really struck a note, tapping into feelings held by a lot of Muslims.

I couldn't stand "We Are The World." Perhaps it's because we were forced to sing it every year in grade school to get to the next grade.

Very true. I also think religious driven violence is nearing its final years. I think people who do comit violence in the name of Religion are coming closer to realizing that the people who are enticing them to do it, have political motives and are not holymen. But just like with South Park people will always find something to fight over, even when religious extremism is dead.

Violence in the name of atheism will never be historically significant.

I will say that I would prefer religion to be eliminated- But I am too much of a realist, and I welcome this news of moderate Muslims. Hopefully it may quiet some. Muslims the world round have condemned extremism (despite there being no requirement for them to do so) numerous times, but it is finally making bigger headlines than it usually does.

The U.S. isn't any stranger to it either, liberals would like to minimize that though.

Really? That's the best one can try?

Understandably, I can see where you are coming from, but the bottomline is that violence in the name of atheism, as religion has caused so many times, is far different than violence committed by atheists. Additionally, the soldiers of these dictators were not blind and violent followers to someone's faith (despite there being no faith in the leaders), but either conscripted, or at the worst, volunteered to follow the principles of the dictator's wishes, which was not always atheism. Stalin did indeed persecute religion at times, even harshly, but it was not entirely historically significant, nor a definite violent attack of atheism. It can be said that it was anti-religious persecutions- In any case, religion still did well in the Soviet Union.

I find your second paragraph highly ironic, if not the most ironic thing I've heard in the last month. I'm a history major at Simon Fraser University.

Fuck, I'd like to see one day when you don't make some pathetic slide against leftism or liberalism. It just isn't possible for you, isn't it?

I didn't know that was in the name of atheism. Maybe you have some 'special' source, available only to reactionaries, I'm sure.

Ermm, do you honestly think that goons will say "IN THE NAME OF ATHEISM, DARWIN BLESS US!!11!"?
I might as well pull out a source on how to wipe your ass in the morning.

Of course, that might come in handy for some people who treat their mouths like the hole in the buttocks--with little thought and care.

Meh, I didn't feel like explaining, it's so much more fun getting hot air from so little effort.

Stalin, Hitler, and Hungarian revolutionaries all stunted religion. Hitler was an atheist and wanted peeps to worship themselves, through him. Stalin saw religion as a threat to his regime, and sought to murder orthodox priests. The Hungarian revolutionaries preached communism as the new 'religion' and encouraged fornication and other anti societal things to make communism, or the Eastern European form of communism, which is really constitutionalized socialism more easily accepted--when you're not tied to the person you had sex with, you would most likely cut the primitive ties you had, and run off--leaving people dependent on the government.
I bring this up, because marriage is seen as a religious obstacle by these communist Hungarians.
