While i clicked my fav'rite bookmark, suddenly there came a warning, and my heart was filled with mourning, mourning for my dear amour, " 'Tis not possible!", i muttered, " give me back my free hardcore!"..... quoth the server, 404.

No, it's just another crap tool to remove traces of your crap internet browsing.
Instead of taking the time to run it, learn how to not be a noob and know what you're doing.

Or maybe you know what you are doing but don't want to take the time to go though your entire registry and look for paths that don't exist anymore, go though all of your temporary internet files and delete them, then go though all of your system temporary file and delete them too. Maybe we want a kick ass tool that can do all that and create a registry back-up just in case it screws up your registry.

By the way, yes, I do use it.

Cleans up unnecessary things on your computer. You'll be surprised how much room it frees up. It also allows you to choose what you want to start up when Windows boots up.

Yep.

Problem with these cleaners is they can, and often do, delete other things you still need from the registry solely because it can't find the program/reference.  I've spent 15+ years as a tech in the computer world and I've had many people come in with weird problems.  I'd ask them some questions and it always seemed that when I asked if they used any registry cleaning tools they said yes.

See what most people don't know is that the registry is used for a lot more than just tracking installed programs.  Software can use the registry to store registration data by splitting it up over many keys in different areas.  This is called obfuscation and is used a lot.  Kinda like game makers who create multitrack CD/DVD 's to hide the registration track they use for the good old "Please Insert Game Disc" shit we all hate.  Now the cleaner comes along and doesn't know what to do with that "extra" data so it deletes it and screws up installed programs.  And that is just one example but most are a lot more subtle in messing with things.  Then there are the CLSID's that easily get pooched by these tools and that is a hell you do not want to be in.

Trust me, you may not notice it right away but keep running the cleaner and you'll be reinstalling windows more often than you really need to.  In fact if you run these tools and find that your media player can't play a file it could before, your icons are fucked up, or a program will not update properly, etc, etc... you'll know why.

Now, if you want run these tools in discovery mode only and then handle each problem found manually you'll be fine, as long as you know what you are doing.  But there are very few people who truly know how the windows registry works so if you don't know just leave it alone.  You'll be much better off having a slightly slower PC than a brick.
