  • Is it worth upgrading a Pentium D 830 to a Pentium D 9xxx

Just wondering,

Cos my Dell (yuck) mobo sucks i cant upgrade to Core 2. Buying a new mobo would probably mean a new case (Dell have dodgy form factors, so a new ATX mobo probably wouldnt fit) and would all cost too much money.

So, since i play around with VMware a bit, ive noticed that despite my processor (Pentium D 830) being advertised as 64bit, it doesnt support 64bit hosts. But the Pentium D 9xxx have the magic VT technology that should let me run 64bit hosts.

Whatcha think?

Would i see any performance increase generally? I notice the 9xxx have 4MB L2 (830 has 2MB), are 65nm and ofc have VT.

Worth an upgrade?

I don't think you would notice that much of a performance increase... And what do you need to do with 64 bit instructions?
Apart from that, it will be slightly better and if it's relatively cheap I'd do it. Else just save up money for teh good computers.

Teh 64bit VMware hosts... and Vista 64 for 4GB RAM.

Ill see what comes up on eBay...

But it should just be a drop in upgrade right?

make sure your mobo supports the lower voltage that chip will need.

How can i tell? (yah i know that sounds dumb).

This Dell mobo is nameless. Ive found out that its got an "Intel 945 Express Chipset, 82945P/PL Memory Controller and Intel(R) 82801GH I/O controller hub (ICH7DH) SATA Controller found in AHCI mode" -- if that helps.

What do you mean, not supporting 64bit? All Pentium D's support 64bit. If anything, it's your mobo or software limiting. Hell, I've got a P4 630 and run Both Linux and Windows 64bit perfectly.

A higher-end 9xx CPU would give you some performance increase, but note that the nine-series processors aren't as well supported as the eight-series. If your mobo doesn't support C2D, it's likey that it doesn't support nine-series either.

Woah, where did that come from?

See, not Intel VT:

My mobo has the Intel 945 express chipset, and looking here its supported.
