Top of the line Yorks are already out, but I read somewhere they don't work with 680i's

EDIT: I found my info here.

While we're at it, can you unlock any pipelines on the 8800GT?

No. They are physically disabled at the factory.

Might want to add here that Yorkfield will work on 680i boards, but only dual core will the quad core variant will not.

I for one are rather annoyed by this but i was going to upgrade my ageing 680i anyway, also many manufactorers websites are still advertising that their board will work with yorkfields, although this is partially true i still wouldnt buy a 680i board for a yorkfield as there not designed for them and will need a BIOS update before they'll support only the dual core varient.

If you want to upgrade i would wait until late January/ early Febuary, by then the X48 chipset will be out and the price drop on the X38 chipset boards should be considerable.

Personally i am waiting until Febuary until i get a whole new rig again, mainly im waiting on the G92_300 (dual PCB cards) to appear from nvidia before i drop another £2k on a new system.

James whatcha rekon for the next mobo, X48 or 780i? (or Skulltrail?)

I was always thinking nVidia FTW, but after hearing some of the gheyness associated with 680i, and the fact that 780i is just 680i + N200... im not too sure.

I personally are going skulltrail with 2 of the top of the line quadcores, mainly because i need a working "show" PC for events and what-not, ive got a 680i at the moment and ive had it for a year, within this year its destroyed 4GB of PC2-8500 RAM and curropted its RAID config twice.

eVGA being the best company in the world IMO replaced my board with a new revision and gave me a 8800GTX for my troubles, since my new revision 680i board ive had no problems and its quite the overclocker.

As for the 780i it is just a 680i at core but so is the X48 its just a improved X38 chipset just without all the bugs that the X38 had, personally i would base my purchase on what vr-zone and H-H have to say about them, im not even sure i will be going for a skulltrail yet ill decide after i see the benchmarks and ill also be waiting for the G92_300 GPU's to be out.

As for making a decision about what mainboard to buy now i have no idea what-so-ever, personally i would wait and see what the reviews and benchmakrs say once the boards are out.

I wouldnt recommend buying a super high end PC for the rest of this year, if you want to blow £2k+ on PC wait until Febuary, although if your price is £1500 and under then buying now is a good idea.
