At the hardware store very popularly known as "Lowe's" they are selling "FAMILY TREES" instead of Christmas trees.

This is a debate topic so if you don't like what everyone is debating about or you have nothing import to say then leave the post and move on.

Personally I think this is absurd. I mean if someone that wasn't a Christian wanted to celebrate Christmas without a Christmas tree only because they didn't like the name IT WAS SOLD BY doesn't necessarily mean that they have to call it that, after they buy it and it is forever theirs to keep. I mean if someone sells you a dog who they have named Fifi you are legally allowed to change the name of the dog if it's yours no one should care right? Also this country was founded by a group of Christians and if it weren't for Jesus Christ being born 2000 years ago then no one would even celebrate the holiday, and if all you want is a holiday that concerns giving and receiving without focusing whole heartedly on the spiritual facts then wait for thanksgiving! No one is forcing you to name your trees Christmas trees and no one is forcing religion upon you.

Debate.

This is a hard topic for me.  Being christian, but realizing christmas has little to do with christ, I find it hard to side on what Fox Noise's Bill O'Reilly calls his "war on christmas."  Christ never commanded a day to celebrate his birth, he wasn't born 12/25, and pretty much every other aspect of christmas is greed and pagan rituals.

But sure, I understand that it's a time set aside for christians and non-christians alike to think of others, have more cheer than normal, and maybe even gain some weight before making new years resolutions.

Honestly, I couldn't give a crap if the word Christmas was NEVER used again with businesses, in media, or uttered in political arenas.  The holiday could even go away..  And I'd still be able to put a tree in my house, fill the room with presents, sing christmas carols, and drink egg nog.  The only "war" on Christmas is that people are paranoid and think the political correctizing of the holiday means they will end up going to jail and have osama bin laden ass rape them if they so much as utter the phrase "merry christmas."

And with that, happy holidays to you all!  lol

Who the hell buys a Christmas tree if he doesn't celebrate Christmas?

Hell, my family doesn't even "celebrate" Christmas by its "true" meaning. No damn church-going for me; I sprint down the stairs (one of the rare times I physically exert myself ) and rip off the wrapping, grab my loot, and dig in for the rest of winter break.

I generally hate Christmas for the shopping frenzy that takes place every year. A friend had a party in my apartment while i was on vacation and she gave me a porcelain Santa Claus as a gift. Stupid woman! I fucking hate those ugly things!!!!

I threw it in trash immediately.

Lowe's Apologizes After 'Family Tree' Controversy

Lowe’s Home Improvement stores are apologizing after receiving thousands of complaints when they labeled a Christmas tree a “family tree” in their 2007 catalog.

When the stores’ printed catalogs hit the streets with the “family tree” terminology, the conservative Christian group, the American Family Association, organized a mass e-mail campaign against the company’s choice of words.

But Lowe's says it was an honest mistake, and quickly altered the wording in their online catalog back to the original.

“We recognize that Christmas trees are the centerpiece of many family traditions during the Christmas season and the headline was intended to reference that,” said Lowe’s spokesperson Karen Cobb.

“It certainly was not intended to offend anyone.”

The Liberty Legal Institute has handled many cases in the battle over
Christmas, including a lawsuit against Plano schools after they banned an elementary school child from handing out candy canes with religious messages on them to classmates.

“I think anybody who wants to call a Christmas tree something other than a Christmas tree is an idiot,” said spokesperson for the institute, Hiram Sasser.

“So now that they’ve fixed that problem, good for them, we’ll move forward and we’ll continue to call Christmas what it is, Christmas.”

Many people echoed Sasser’s sentiments, citing an over-concern with political correctness as a problem.

Lowe's maintains that their variation on the tree terminology was nothing more than a mistake, and they plan to redouble proofing efforts for their catalog in the future.

I don't see why anyone would be offended if someone called it a christmas tree or a family tree.  If you buy it, you can call it whatever the hell you want to.

I'm glad they had to say sorry for being overly politically correct.

Christmas trees have little to do with the holiday besides the name anyway. I don't see how it is even considered a symbol of Christianity. It's a pine tree that's been pimped, I don't buy that it has strong religious connections, especially in this day and age.

being offended by the term is just as stupid as the term "family tree" itself...

Exactly. Not a big deal. And the whole thing proved to be a mistake anyway. Not exactly a 'War on Christmas' nor political correctness destroying your country.

Being adopted, my family tree is somewhat complicated.

TBH, I find the anti-christmas trend to be very offensive.  Maybe anti-christmas campaigners should spend their time looking for boxes of tissues rather than trying to spoil a global holiday for everyone else.

Christmas tree > family tree. The latter phrase shares definitions with something completely different. Another attempt at political correctness only serves to further obfuscate the English language.

But go to Lowe's website. It advertises CHRISTMAS trees plain as day on the front page. This may be an isolated incident of a manager trying to placate a couple of angry customers. My Lowe's even has nativity sets, which are about as politically-incorrect as you can get.

It's a Christmas tree. It's one of many modern day symbols for a Christian holiday. So yes, it should also be called a Christmas tree.

It's not like we should start calling dreidels "Holiday Spinners" either.

I doubt it even had to do with customers.

Speaking of retail and Christmas, wasnt it Coca Cola who brought us Santa Claus and what we now know as Christmas tradition? I know the Saint Nick legend has been around for centuries but I am talking about the image.
