I started two weeks after my father quit. I guess I was hooked already and just didn't realize it. I smoked Camel non-filters for years before switching to Winston Lights. I smoked a pipe (preferred whiskey blends)and cigars (mostly fuente and monticristo)as well. I loved it all, and never really had a problem outside of not being able to run for miles anymore (I'm also in my 30s, which slows me down a bit too).
This spring, I got evicted so the city could buy the place I rented, tear it down, and build a new juvenile detention center there. I bought a place, but my mortgage is about 500 bucks more than my rent was, so I needed to adjust my budget. My wife and I both smoked, so we were going through about 250 bucks a month on smokes alone. "That's just stupid" I said, and we both quit. Roof versus smokes....it was an easy decision. 18 years after starting, I quit smoking. I'm going on 6 months now, and so far so good. There are still cravings, but I manage.
I still have probably 300 bucks worth of cigars. I keep my humidor set, and one day, I'll have a cigar. I'm thinking the 1 year anniversary of quitting in a good target date.
The fucking taxes on smokes in the U.S. didn't make it harder to quit either. Prices have doubled in less than 10 years. Almost 5 bucks a pack is a joke. Even buying by the carton, that was 50+ bucks a week for the wife and me.
