Welp, its damn near christmas  so I was wondering what i should upgrade in my comp for better preformance.

CPU: AMD Athlon 64 X2 4200+ @ 2.4Ghz (overclocked)

Mobo: Gigabyte Socket AM2, SLI board w/ 4 x DDR2 slots (max DDR2 800) and 4 SATA 3.0GB/s ports + 2 PCI-E slots, and 3 PCI slots

Hard Drive: Maxtor 200GB IDE internal

Optical Drives: Sony 52x CD/CD-RW/CD-R/DVD combo drive, and Plextor DVD-R/DVD-RW drive. Both Internal

PSU: 550W Enermax

VGAs: 2x7600GT in SLI (one EVGA, one PNY)

Monitor: 17" CTR

Speakers: Logitech X-520 5.1 surround sound

Sound card: onboard

RAM: 3GB PC6400 DDR2

So what should I upgrade (keep it to like one or two parts for less than 300) ?

Yeah, I would say upgrade the video card.  What kind/how much RAM do you have?

Meh i might consider it but for full affect i need vista (unless XP gets Dx10 patch) and i wont upgrade to vista untill its better.

I'm really considering the CPU, PSU, or HD, but im open to suggestions in other fields

New monitor.
17" is too small and not widescreen enough.

shoulda done some black friday shopping like me and gotten an Acer 22" widescreen for $170 and a seagate 320gb sata drive for only $60!  as far as your meat and potatoes, i'd either get a top o' the line amd cpu since you already have the am2 mobo or i'd get an 8800gt or ati 3870.  Your gonna have to shop tigerdirect if you want to get your hands on an 8800gt cuz newegg sells out within hours.  here a link to an ati 3870 at a decent price.  again hard to find.  http://accessories.us.dell.com/sna/cate … =0&y=0

DX10 is overrated atm. XP + 8800 still does fine.

Are you running out of HDD space? Are you having power issues?

I have an AMD 3800+ x2 and an 8800GTS 320MB. I find that in new games (mainly Crysis) the CPU isn't enough, but in everything else it is fine. ANd it is much worse than yours.

I still think a GPU would be your best upgrade, and for that you can't go past the 8800GT.

edit:

And monitor as well, but you wouldn't want to do that until you got a better GPU (if you were to go widescreen, 22" for example).

I am running out of space on HDD at the moment. Power issuse arnt there but for future upgrading i thought it would be good to upgrade that, and I just thought that i could get a better CPU ebing that the AM2s are fairly cheap

Hmm, ok.

550W is a fairly strong PSU - I have a 500W Silverstone and it is enough for pretty much anything bar SLi/many harddrives.

That leaves you with a choice between HDD, CPU and GPU.

As I said before, that CPU is still decent - unless you find you are having problems or that it feels slow, the GPU upgrade is always going to be a better option as far as games go (I am assuming that is what this is for?).

HDD is the other big decision. You can get a lot of space for not many dollars now, so that would be a cheap and easy upgrade.

If you are happy with the screen there is no reason to upgrade, but even a 19" LCD would be a massive improvement (unless it is some amazing CRT).

It all comes down to two things really:

1. Budget.
2. What is most important for you in your computer.

Preformance is most important for my computer. Budget is only like 300 for now. As for the CTR monitor, ive had the thing for 7 years now and not 1 dead pixel on it. its an amazing fucking CTR.
