Problem Since Upgrading to Windows XP Pro

For reasons not worth going into, I recently had to upgrade from Windows XP Home to the Professional Edition. Since then, I can't start up BF2 and my video performance has degraded significantly (slow scrolling on web pages, etc). I thought maybe I needed to re-install the latest video driver, but when I attempted to do so I got a message stating that "Setup cannot find components that can be installed on my current hardware and software configuration." Everything worked fine before the OS upgrade. My video card is a Radeon X1950 Pro.

Please help!

Hmm. Slow scrolling etc is normally a symptom of video drivers - namely not having any installed.

I am assuming you don't have any installed? Have you tried re-downloading drivers, and if that still doesn't work, try downloading older drivers for your card.

I don't want to be jerk, but it is the video card drivers. Make sure you download them fully, and run driver cleaner pro in sfae mode to clear out anything that could be there.

I'm running XP Pro and have been running it for a few years and haven't had any issues. BF2 plays fine, no slow scrolling web-pages. Try downloading new drivers or drivers from a different site if the ones you're using aren't working.

backup the stuff you want to keep on cd or dvd... then reformat... delete the partition... create the partition and format... install xp pro... enjoy

Catbox that's not needed... It's the video drivers like three people above you said. Do it this way:
1. Download newest drivers
2. Download Driver Cleaner Pro
3. Reboot in safe mode
4. Run Driver Cleaner Pro in safe mode, choose ATi drivers (I don't know the correct name I always remove my nVidia drivers)
5. Reboot again in normal mode
6. Install new drivers
7. Reboot and enjoy.

If @ Step 6. you still cannot install the new drivers, try downloading some older ones and try to install them instead.

Thanks guys, but as I stated in my original post, I TRIED downloading the driver and got this message:

"Setup cannot find components that can be installed on my current hardware and software configuration."

This happened when I tried downloading earlier versions of the driver, as well.

Try installing the drivers in safe mode, if that fails, try to repair windows, if that fails... Reformat and reinstall XP Pro -.-

Sounds to me like you may want to run a repair/re-upgrade your Windows. It sounds like it is missing some components for some reason. If you continue having problems you might actually want to format and start over after backing up your data. This could also be a hard drive issue, and the Windows data it needs is installed on a corrupt section of the disk.

Some additional info. During the install, I got the following message:

"The file 'VIAAGP1.SYS on VIA AGP Filter Driver Disk is needed."

I had no idea where to find this file, or what it was, and skipped past this to complete the install.

I have tried installing the drive in safe mode and did a re-install of XP Pro, to no avail. Please, any suggestions short of a hard drive re-format would be greatly appreciated.

Get your motherboard drivers, there is probally and AGP driver neeeded. Do you know what particual motherboard you have?

When you go to your hardware manager do you see anything with yellow exclamaitons on it?

Home and Pro are basicly the same thing, upgrading has always just currupted my files, just do a full install and leave it.

What do you think Pro has the Home doesn't?

My employer is insisting I upgrade. They state the Pro edition is required for me to access the office server from home via VPN. Is this not the case? Also, what do you mean by a "full install?" Do you mean a reformat and re-install of the OS (Home then Pro)? I can't do a "full install" of Pro version alone without install the Home version first because I purchased the upgrade version of Pro.

You are correct, there should be no needed. I wonder if it has something to with GART.

EDIT: Yep im prett sure this GART related ... had the same issue once a long time ago ... searching ...

I know the reverse of that is true; I use to allow people to join my network and to RDP into my pc.

I agree with snipy. When the system says it can't install components for the driver it is usually because of the mobo drivers. In this case the AGP GART driver.

And to the OP, your board is using the VIA chipset. You can get the drivers from the VIA web site.

I think that might be the only difference between Home and Pro, is the remote server accessing part.
If that's what you are going to be doing then I guess you might need to upgrade, unless you can just download the files you need onto Home version.
By full install I mean just a reformat and a fresh install of Home only.

I was going to get Pro also, but since I wasn't going to be doing any connecting to other computers, I just got Home.
Sorry I don't know the technical terms for everything, but I think that's what it's all about.

there are drivers... Abit's search sux I ended up looking using the chipset "VIA PT880".

You probally want to rerun the chipset driver.

It also has things that help you if you are doing certian type of develpment and needed IIS, SqlServer (other than the msde) or BizTalk.

If it becomes necessary to do a clean installing of the OS, you can do it without installing Home first. Boot to the Pro disk and run the installation as you would normally. Because it is an upgrade disk you will be prompted during the installation to provide proof that you have a full copy of Windows. Insert your Home disk, the install will verify, then put the Pro disk back in and the install will complete as normal.

I updated the Abit drivers and now things seem to be back to normal. Scrolling is OK, BF2 runs. For good measure, I went ahead and re-installed the video driver, which I wasn't able to do before. But strangely enough, I'm still getting the message "The file 'VIAAGP1.SYS on VIA AGP Filter Driver Disk is needed." The message pops up every time I restart the computer.

You guys have gone a long way towards resolving my problem, and I appreciate your taking the time to help me very, very much. Anyone have any idea why I'm still getting this blasted message?

See if you can unzip those drivers into a folder. It may be not be a .zip per say but you might be able to extract them using winrar or winzip. Then when it asks you point to that folder.

try to uninstall the drivers first in safe mode completely, then make sure you download the latest & correct catylist drivers. After installing restart computer. Also unistall battlefield and reinstall it. It you still have issues, a full format will be the next step.
