  • I think I may have just lost a core on my processor, what do you think

My AM 5200+ is running like shit out of no where.  I defrag all drives, partitions. I ran avg virus scan on all drives, partitions.  I bring up task manager, list processes by most use, and it shows system idle at 99%, but the processer usage is around 50%.  I have 25 programs runs in back ground, nothing that be eating up 50% of the usage.   So is it possible I lost a core?? Nothing I do seems to fix this.  I havent tried to reformat which I would think be pointless, I have had this processor for almost 2 years.   I paid almost 400 bucks for it when it was new.  Now there like 120ish.  So tell me what you all think, or have any of you seen or heard about this before.  I was reading how the X4 processor will be sold with a bad core as an X3...So I question my x2.  If an X4, which just came out, in testing had bad cores then maybe my X2 could crap out too....but who know??

I don't think you can lose just a single core, it happens veeeery rarely. The thing with the production is that one core does not pass the test and they tell the other good cores to not count him in anymore, but in desktop PC's itself the remaining cores do not die. Or the CPU dies at all, or it just works.
Maybe reformat isn't pointless and you could try it? Or you may have something with your mobo, they can cause the strangest things. I once had an asus board which gave me these striped views and other weird stuff, slow performance and BSOD's...

hmm i do have an asus m2n sli deluxe mobo.   as far as the cpu goings you do realize you can set the affinity of programs, so you could setup your dual core system to only run systems files on cpu1 and a game or benchmark on cpu2.  This is on trick in speed up vista to btw, it also works in xp

i have had a lot of asus mobo with out any problems...dont want to start now.  I have had a few bad abit boards, i have long switch to asus.

No, it simply means you aren't doing enough that can take advantage of both cores. Like someone said above, you can allocate cores to programs.
