hey!

i was wondering what people who have actually been to war think about games like bf2 (and others) as well as movies that talk about war? do you / they feel it just isnt right for people to enjoy "killing" on the screen? is it disrespectful?

i personally have been to the army, but not to war. i enjoy games like bf2 and movies like saving private ryan (and so on...), but i never considered that the very basis of all this is actuall suffering of real people. not saying we should have more wars to get better games or movies! i mean, for someone who has fought in WWII or Iraq, vitenam or any other war, i could imagine it be strange to them seeing young children (among others) play what they experienced as hell. on the other hand, we have war movies that try to bring the message across that war is suffering, pain and killing (i think all war movies try to get that message across), but to be honest, i never seen a war movie that made me feel that i shouldnt have joined the army or stop playing war games. however, i did notice that me and alot of other movie visitors did say talk about movies like "did u see that guy getting blown up by a tank? SICK!!!". i have to admit that i do feel disgusted by myself at times when i think about this.

i dont wanna point the finger at any one, like i said, i was just wondering...

I hate any game or movie which displays gore, torture, or prolonged suffering.  It usually means I shoot the bots a few more times than is necessary, but hey, the faster they stop wriggling the better I feel about it.

I haven't been to war myself, but I know a good deal of people who have. I know them 'cause I play violent video games with them. :>

I guess most of it is down to the fact that war is probably the most competitive event you can participate in, and that it's just somewhat more entertaining to many people to see the corpses of your enemies flying off as you hit them with your tank gun than having a point or two more on a final scoreboard in a sports game.

I guess it's somewhat similar to coroners watching slasher movies or cops playing GTA.

To be honest, games are made to entertain. If it doesn't entertain you, don't play it. There are also rescue simulators, and role playing games where things happen that could happen irl.
I think what you have to look at is the intention of something. Unless it's intended to offend, I don't think you should treat it as such.

I feel that I have a strong sense of reality.

I get nauseous seeing real pain and\or blood and injuries, but with Hitman, SAW, Silent Hill, Painkiller, Soldier of Fortune etc, I can rip, kill, maim, torture, crucify, explode, rip to pieces, throw people into a blender all day and go: "This is so fucking cool.". I just don't let real life spoil my entertainment.

I think I understand the difference between fiction and reality. That's how I handle it.

my friend's brother has been to afghanistan as front line fighter in a bushmaster, all he did the first few weeks when he came back from there was playing Red Orchestra with the boxes up as loud as they could go - he missed the noises, if it were up to him he'd stay there for eternity but his girlfriend (now wife) wouldn't let him due to her nervous breakdown :p.

my biggest compliant is I rarely ever saw anyone ever, in the games you always see the enemy.

What about the part in Soldier of Fortune where you can set timescale to .2 and watch limbs and entrails respectively fly off and out of bodies at leisurely speeds.

never played it.  Im not saying it shouldnt be in the games.  Im just amazed at the detail and realistic portrayal of it all.

perhaps its supposed to make you stop and think...

In jedi outcast II, if you slice a storm trooper open with your light saber, he doesn't die for nearly 30 seconds, and i feel bad every time i do it, so now i usually attempt to disarm them or evade them.

There are some terrible chest-beating war movies out there but there haven't been as many lately as I think it's harder to get away with the old style of propaganda. It's actually hilarious watching films like Red Dawn, Invasion USA, The Green Berets (which was nearly banned in Ireland for being a shameless piece of propaganda!), Delta Force, The Rambo Sequels and Missing In Action now because they seem so blatantly biased in their storylines and characterisation.

Even films like Behind Enemy Lines and Black Hawk Down, which are in many ways jingoistic, have redeeming qualities that their 70's and 80's equivalents were lacking and their characterisation is a little less two-dimensional.

I think it's a shame there aren't more war movies that aren't American. I just saw "The Life of Others" recently, a German movie about west Germany back in the 80s that was pretty shocking. It would be nice to see some variety in movies and games, as seeing different perspectives is really interesting - and enlightening as well.

I have a mate not long back from Iraq who plays all sorts of video games. To be honest I think he found the war much like a video game, I think thats how he rationalises all the people he has killed.

Totally weird talking about it with him, he seems detached from the thought of the actual dieing that goes on....

Kooda

Also, I guess some people are just natural born killers, built for the kill and all that...

Video games are a form of entertainment, so like movies and music, if you don't like them just don't play them!  I know a lot of men and women in the US armed services whom I play BF2/CS/SOF with. It is just a personal thing if it offends you or not

Americas Army is a recruiting tool put out by the good ole US Army, apparently they are trying to recruit video geeks to pick up real rifles and use them on enemies of the state as opposed to their highschool classmates

I'd hate to call it a recruiting tool, simply because I wouldn't want someone joining the military (especially a combat MOS) based off a video game. I'd call it an information tool... to pique someone's interest, do more research on the subject, see if some time in the military would be their cup of tea.
