When people say 2nd world these days I think they refer to countries where living standards are decent although large political and social flaws still exist. Latin America falls into the category because the wealth is concentrated into the hands of the few while the vast majority barely put food on the table. Child labour is rife thoughout Latin America for instance. The vast gulf between the haves and have nots was evident to me in Panamá - gleaming penthouse apartment blocks by the sea and all-you-can-eat, all-you-can-drink resorts blocks from heroine-adled slums housing thousands of illiterate people barely able to scrape a living together.GunSlinger OIF II wrote:
ive always had issue with the term "3rd world" its a relic from the cold war that has nothing to do with a nation's economic strength. 1st world being the United States and our friends, 2nd World being the USSR and their camp and 3rd simply being other. I went to Venezuela in the 80's. There was no shortage of rich people or affluent neighborhoods.

Didn't the majority vote for ratifying the EU constitution? If not why is it still alive?CameronPoe wrote:
Unfortunately for them though democracy involves the majority rule, which for the forseeable future is Chavez all the way. That's what happens when a long chain of successive oligarchies and country clubbers allow an absolutely vast underclass of impoverished folk to develop in a country.GunSlinger OIF II wrote:
People think that Chavez is loved and revered by all venezuelans. Couldnt be farther from the truth. A huge number, particularly the students, cant wait till he leaves office.

take that cunt, sorry for the use of words, but no other word for this fucker.
When did Venezuela pick itself up and walk away from South America?CameronPoe wrote:
I'd put money with you that he won't. You really can't understand that it is possible for someone to run a democracy outside of the west? His whole platform of 'legitimate voicebox for the oppressed masses against western exploitation' would be destroyed in a flash if he were to act contrary to the majority will of his own people. Sheesh.ATG wrote:
Watch him overturn the results anyway.
I'm willing to bet Chavez isn't done with this. I believe his term expires in 2012, correct? He's got 4+ more years to work it.

The EU consitution was rejected by France and the Netherlands in referendums, as such loads of other EU countries didn't bother having referendums because it would have been pointless. They now have a new 'treaty' which is apparently a stealth constitution that will mainly be ratified by the parliaments (not through referendums). The only spanner in the works is that the constitution of the Republic of Ireland demands such a move be put to a referendum. So basically all the anti-EU types will be descending on Ireland to try and force a No vote to destory the treaty.Kmarion wrote:
