This is more easily related to the Civil rights movement in the United States of the mid 20th century. Not of religion, but just poor education and support of the government being over taken by those discriminated against. Unfortunately for them a lot of their domestic and international support sees them as Muslims instead of poor people.
I'm all for the equality of all religion, race, personal practices (IE, gay or straight). I find that more often then not it is not these things that affect a person's decisions but rather the situation they are placed in or raised by. It is the small minority, religious zealots of all types that have moved this into another crusade vs jihad.
