It's funny. While walking around cons I am usually focused on the costume itself, and on that same line of thought, how much effort/talent/work/creativity went into creating it from scratch.

Seeing a big girl in a costume isn't a bad cosplay, it's mere someone who doesn't usually resemble the character they are trying to portray, who is usually IMPOSSIBLY thin and unrealistically shaped. It's pretty shallow and rude, essentially. And a lot of times a costume isn't quite done yet, it's missing a wig or something.

Here's an example of what I am talking about.

This is me in a costume I put together from items I found at a thrift store. The clothes are contemporary so I didn't have to fabricate or create anything, just put different styles together. I am standing next to a girl who hand-made her costume. That coat took something like 1,000 hours of individually-sewn beads, she has won every contest she has entered it in (she is now a judge at competitions), fucking trophies GALORE. It's astonishing to me, not because it's a particularly cool costume, but because of the degree to which she used her MIND in creating it.

At NDK this year I saw a LOT of people who didn't particularly fit their intended characters image, but whose actual costumes were phenomenal!

I was blown away by the actual construction of that pyramid. It was made of a screen-like canvas that allowed him to see out, but no one could see it. This made it incredibly light (easy to wear) but he painted it so that it looked fucking heavy.
