Jenspm and I were having a bit of a discussion on IRC just now, and we aren't sure about the ratio of some widescreen monitors. When you think of widescreen, you typically think 16:9. However, we found a considerable amount of monitors that were of the ratio 16:10. Is there any reason for so many monitors being a resolution that is a bit off? This will prevent a crisp picture for games displayed in 16:9, as there will have be a bit of interpolation to fill in the extra pixels.

Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

16:9 mostly is just hdtv ratio. almost every pc monitor I've seen is 16:10 (though my laptop is 16:9)   i don't see it making a difference in games.  look at 17-19 inch lcd's. they are 5:4 @1280x1024 while every other non widescreen is 4:3 and there is no quality loss as long as the game supports 1280x1024 (which i haven't played any made in the last 3 or 4 yrs that don't)  the same would go for the WS resolutions also. the game will not stretch the image but render the extra pixels.  besides since almost every WS monitor is 16:10 i'm sure games are designed with this in mind.

Tv's 16:9
PC Monitors 16:10

The best explanation for this is so that you can have toolbar or player still visible while viewing 16:9 but not on the actual picture. You would expect PC games to use the desktop resolution and not need to be convert from 16:9 to 16:10

16:9 is standard HDTV, 16:10 is a standard widescreen monitor, you get some crossover of the 2 but those are the standards.
