(Number on right)

I have my case open, facing up so hot air rises. I got the room fan on, both windows open, the card fan, and a smaller fan blowing directly into the case.

This is after playing Crysis demo on all low/off, low resolution, and low refresh rate.

I know Crysis demo is a lot to ask for for:

2 gb ram
GeForce 7800 GT
AMD/Athlon 64 x2 dual core processor CPU

But I didn't think it'd be so much...

Any ideas?

Don't touch the card, but place your hand near it. Is it really that hot? It's possible your temperature reader might be a little screwy. 92 *C is just waaaaaaaaaaay too hot and seems a little fishy.

And does it smell like anything is burning/melting? On my shitty 9800 Pro, the fan sometimes stops, and I'll know because I start to smell the scent of something burning. Then I have to rush to the case and manually spin the fan to get it going again... like a fucking boat

It burns my hand to the touch. Not literally burn but it's too warm for comfort.
When I come home from the cold winter weather I place my hands above my graphics card to defrost myself.

Haven't smelled anything... yet.

Edit: I know it seems fishy, but there's hardly a reason for me to fake this. While my Crysis demo froze, I Control-Alt-Deleted out, quickly went to nVidia control pannel, and ta da, 92 degrees.

No, I'm not saying it's fishy as in you're faking it, but fishy as in there might be something with the temperature readings.

My graphics card heatsink also burns my hand a little, but 92 C is nearly the boiling point of water. If you are able to actually hold your hand on it, then it's probably not that hot. If it were 92, you'd probably scald your hand.

I'd say just turn off your computer for half an hour to an hour and then turn it back on and check the readings. Try playing the demo again and see if it happens again.

Not really.

My X800 GTO used to push low 90's at load on stock cooling. I bought a Zalman VF-900 and the temps dropped to around 50 - 60*C at load.

I definitely recommend a Zalman VF-900. Awesome cooler, and only like 30 bucks.

I am able to put my hand on it, to check, but that's never for too long. I'm sure a couple seconds more and I'll get a small boo boo.

I'll leave my comp off overnight and try it in the morning. That should be plenty of time.

Dude, most graphic cards have temperature tolerances of over 100*C.

Well they have tolerances of over 100, but that's not how they should be running normally...

That's not overheating. That's perfectly normal actually...
Video cards go up to way higher temps and still work...

You must realize... It's not the whole card that is that hot. It's not like a fucking stove. It's the CORE. The part of the card that you can't touch with your hands, because it's behind a heatsink AND a IHS plate.

My 8800 Ultra's when they where on air cooling regulary topped 96C, i was worried about temps hence i watercooled them even though NVIDIA told me it would be fine.

I would look at a aftermarket HSF for your card.

...

As long as it's within the temperature tolerance, it's fine.

Although because it is that warm, it will heat up case ambient temperature and therefore heat up other parts. Also, the cooler the part the better. 92*C won't harm it, but it isn't exactly an ideal temperature. A Zalman VF-900 heat sink will drop the temps A LOT, I recommend getting one.

QFT, my 7900GT was also running hot on stock cooling, now it's on 40-50 at load .
Go buy yourself an vf-900 or -700

On topic: my GPU is running hot at 80C regularly. When it hits that, it shuts down and I have to hard boot.  Anyone know how to bypass this?

My 7900GTO (GTO for killer stock cooling ) Runs 65 degrees celcius at the MAX !

@ topic

Having your Case open makes cooling WORSE !! because it interupts the airflow inside your case...

I think I must be scarred for life by my Radeon 9800 then

I'm on my third one due to fan failures and heating issues (probably could blame my case a little for that as well). Fortunately I've only had to buy the card once, but still, it's friggin annoying.

Dude, buy a new cooler.

Stock cooling almost always sucks.

EDIT: I do say almost always. The dual slot cards with the huge coolers do quite well. My stock X1950XT cooler actually works better than my VF-900. It's also sexier.

hahaha. These ppl complain that 92c is hot. You should see how hot my overclocked HD 2900pro gets!

it was close to 100c O.O the fan starts to spin at 100% if it reaches that temp.
now I run the fan at high speed so it stays below 90c thank god I get the HD 3870 soon

edit: I could have barbeque party with this R600. the air coming out of the back of the cooler is freaking hot.

Lol, yeah the air coming off my X1950XT in the back is quite hot at under 60*C, I can't imagine what 90*C would feel like.

Haha, now 109*C...yeah that's getting a bit warm.

I wouldn't run it that high, shut that baby off and let it cool!

Maybe its a fault in the card. is it overclocked ?

After I went through my first card, I RMA'd it and got a second. That time I decided to put a new cooler on it. Well when I finished putting the new cooling on it, the card wouldn't work! So I had to RMA again It's possible I might've scratched something on the card, but I highly doubt it, I'm always very careful.
