I plan on buying and playing CoD4, but first I need RAM. Sadly, I have 512 MB of RAM and an X300. (Go ahead, cringe!) Anyway, I want more RAM, but I don't know what type to buy, because all those numbers confuse me. Also, I am on a budget. Tell me what I need to do to buy an effective component for under $25.

While you're at it, what is a good, cheap graphics card that is better than the X300?

What are your motherboard specs? You need to find out what kind of RAM it accepts (DDR1, DDR2, 667, 800, etc.). Plus you also need to check the voltages. It's a lot of work but it'll be worth it.

Earlier in the week I ordered 2 gigs of RAM only to find out that the mobo I'm going to order doesn't allow you to change the voltage from 1.8 to 2.1 so I had to send it back

That pretty much prevents you from getting a good component. You need a bigger budget. (More like $100 for decent ram only)

also, when it comes to ram, more isn't necessarily better. it's good to have faster ram if your motherboard can handle it.

You really left out any information which would let us help you.

Mmkay, here are some vital PC specs:

512mb RAM (2 Sticks of 256, DDR2, PC2-3200)
Pentium 4 processor 2.8GHz
I run XP Home Edition. Tell me what else, and be specific about what exactly I need to do.

Look on newegg (or any other pc site) for DDR2 ram. All the rams have different speeds, for DDR2, PC6400 is the most fastest, most available ram. I'd ditch those two 256's and get two of these: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a … 6820231095 or http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a … 6820161198

- get at least 1024MB of ddr2 ram
- get a ATI x1950

all together: ~ €/$ 150 max

You should deffinetly get at least 1GB of RAM, it's the minimum for running games now.  Also, there is a deal on newegg.com where you can get 2GB for something like 40 bucks.  Geil gaming RAM

OK
Ram first because it is the cheapest way to speed up your computer.
As someone pointed out above, grab cpuz (google it) and find out exactly what you have already. It will tell you all the information you need regarding your motherboard and your memory.

Since you run XP your machine won't see much more than 3 Gb of RAM. I have 4 Gb installed but only 3.2 is usable by XP. It is a technical issue with 32 bit processors.

So assuming you have 4 slots for RAM, the first thing would be to grab 2 stick of DDR2 @ 1 Gb (subject to what you find with Cpuz). I have 4 sticks of Value Select from Corsair and have no problems. You don't want to go too cheap either so pick something middle of the road.
The added RAM will significantly improve your computer performance. I would put the NEW memory in the slots presently occupied by your 2 sticks of 256, and then move the 2 256Mb to the other slots.

It is most likely that your new RAM will be faster than your present memory. So it might be advisable to NOT use your current memory with your slower present ones. It depends on your BUS speed of your motherboard.

Okay, I'm buying this RAM:

But what should I upgrade my graphics card to? And nothing over $150.

Yeah, well, so what?
So I'm going to recommend you get an 8800GT even though it costs more than $150.

This has 512MB:
XFX PVT84JYDF3 GeForce 8600GT 512MB 128-bit GDDR3 PCI Express x16 HDCP Ready SLI Supported Video Card
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a … 6814150260

You have a PCI-express slot, right?

Ewww no. Stay away from 8600. You can pay just $10 - $20 more and get a little bit better performance (and sometimes makes the difference between making a game playable and unplayable)

These charts are all at the highest settings possible. You can adjust them to fit your resolution and whatever other settings you plan on using.

New GPU's under $150: The x1900/x1950 are the best non-dx10 cards on the market right now. Even (embarrassingly) nearly match the 8-series in FPS in certain titles/tasks.

You're lucky your RAM is DDR2, it saves the headache of buying a new motherboard in order to modernize/update your system. When I first read that you had 512Mb and an X300, I would of thought it would be a socket939 DDR1 system. Lucky for you it wasn't, so all you need is some good-quality PC2-6400+ RAM-- preferably a dual-channel 2Gb kit if you want to play CoD4 comfortably.

I've never used an 8600, but they don't look too bad on the Tom's Hardware chart. This one looks better though:
GECUBE HV195PG3-E3 (R) Radeon X1950PRO 512MB 256-bit GDDR3 PCI Express x16 HDCP Ready CrossFire Supported Video Card

Well more is always better than less, cause the more ram, the less virtual ram you need which means less HD reading/writing.
You are right about different clock speeds though, and faster is better BUT all ram will only be as fast as the slowest ram slotted, for example if you have 512 with 333 Mhz and 512 with 400 Mhz, you'll have 1GB running at 333Mhz. So the best is just to then is to buy 1GB new ram, at 400Mhz. or another 512 at 333Mhz, so you don't pay too much for what it can do (numbers are just for example)

Yes get what san4 posted! That's the perfect card. This one has 512 MB, the one in the charts I posted only had 256, which explains why it doesn't look so great in higher resolutions. Also, in those charts the 8600 did have 512. So even in those higher resolutions, the radeon was still able to beat out the 8600.
