Special Effects: AfterEffects (for a Mac)
Editing: Final Cut Pro (also for Mac), works great in conjunction with AE
But for editing, I personally prefer Adobe Premier because I hate Macs. But FCP and Premier are pretty close and each have their strengths and weaknesses. Unfortunately I don't know how to use AfterEffects But I do work at my university's tv station and we use both FCP and Premier, and AfterEffects is installed on the Macs and people have used it before to make some great stuff.

After effects CS3 is great... If your familiar with Pshop interface that helps also...
and it works fine on my PC... I have nothing against macs... Its just that the adobe stuff works the same on mac or pc...
