Hey Danyboy, welcome to Oz. Broadband speed aint great down here, especially if you live away from town. Most Australians get by OK , but compared to other countries its not great. The new govt says it will try and upgrade our broadband with fibreoptic cable, which is a great idea, I hope they keep their promise. Best of luck gaming, maybe try another ISP, Internode is pretty good.

When playing games online, like visiting websites, you use some of your data allowance (uploading and downloading, not much i think). If your with ISP's like Internode, they let you play on there servers for free (meaning they give you the data you used on there servers back.

54mpbs definately sounds wrong. The fastest you can get is 24mpbs (disregarding real-world inhibitions). Go to www.speedtest.net and see what you really get.

You'll also have to take into account "Australia" pretty much means Sydney or Melbourne so you're gonna average about 70-80ms, unless you can find servers which specify WA or SA.

The good news is in Australia our Internet is so shit that no-one can have a server in their own home so big Data Centres hold them all making them easy to find. You're big names are:

GameArena (Helstra Bigpond)
Internode or IGN
OGN (OptusNet)
3FL (WestNet)
GamingSA (Not a clue, I think its Adam Internet)

You didn't happen to go with Dodo did you?

As for Download Limit, here in Australia the big fat Goliath Telstra charges through the nose for everything so you only get x amount of GB per month. EVERYTHING accounts to this limit, and in some cases, the Download limit is also an Upload limit.
Depending on who you went with, you could have as little as 200MB to use per month before getting excess usage fees (at $150/1GB) or be shaped to 64kbps.

You didn't go with Dodo did you?

Edit: PS. Welcome to Australia, be forewarned that Summer hasn't hit yet

That's the speed between you're computer and the modem

Yes, ANYTHING you do online counts towards this quota.

Who are you with? I'll be able to find you a usage meter so you know how you're going.

That, along with Kath and Kim should be wrapped up in duct tape, thrown on the back of a flatbed, craned onto a cargo ship, transported across the Pacific, driven to Cape Canaveral then launched into the Sun.

By the sound of it, you're paying $59.95 for 12GB @ 256kbps.

"Unlimited" does not exist in Australia. No ifs, buts or otherwise, sorry.

The problem with Australia is our population is way too spread out to be able to make high speed broadband cost effective. Many European and Asian countries have high population densities and can therefor run a fibre around a city which gives most of the population high speed braodband access. We have to cross deserts/bushland/ocean to link up most of our major cities.

aha, i found it out, cheez its changed since last time, unlimited is now 12gb a month but u dont get charged for going over, your internet speed just decreases.

Excuses, excuses. 98% of the country live in the major cities, 80% in Melbourne and Sydney alone.

Even so, OPEL is being rolled out, and Melbourne and Sydney (and maybe Brisbane, Perth and Adelaide) will get the FTTN upgrade Labor are touting about. This will throw away the shackles of Telstra (Telstra practically announced themselves they don't want to participate in the FTTN unless they can price fix).

We have to cross deserts/bushland/ocean to link up most of our major cities.
The Return on Investment on backhaul has paid for itself in 6 years. They're just sitting on their arses waiting for the government and using the excuse above.

Again, PIPE Networks are making a link to Guam, Google are making a link to Guam (from USA). These two investments will stop the duopoly (ie: price fixing) on our international bandwidth.
