I just converted a movie from .avi to mpeg-4 (so the Zune player could watch it - trying to get it to play on my 360).  Well it worked, except the video is upside down now.  HALP

I'm gotten this many times with DirectShow (Microsoft's video playing architecture on Windows).

The only solution I've found is to re-encode and add a flip filter.  If you are using a Premiere like program this should be pretty easy.  What program did you use to encode the video to MP4?  And, by MP4 do you mean h.264 or just a .divx file?

I used Jodix Free Ipod Video Converter.  And i'm really not incredibly tech-savee, so all I know is it's Mpeg-4.  You could look into the program.

The thing is, I'm trying to do this without spending 30 Dollars.  All I want to do is watch my movie on my 360.

The cause, if I remember correctly is because of the field order of the source video.  I've had some video do this when I try to convert them.  It's a pain but it can be fixed with the right software.

As I mentioned before, you can try Premiere or my personal choice TMpgEnc 4.0 XPress as it has filters for flipping the video horizontally or vertically and support a whack load of output formats.  Additionally, there are other commercial ones you can use that do the same thing.

You can also use a 100% free frame serving technology called AviSynth (http://avisynth.org/mediawiki/Main_Page).  This is the swiss army knife of video manipulation.  Once installed you write a small, and very easy to do, script that tells what you want the source video to look like, including flipping it.  Then pretty much any program that can read an AVI can use the AVS file type of AviSynth to make your output.  On top of that, a lot of commercial software supports using AviSynth because it truly is a marvel when it comes to video.

It may sound a little daunting but it really is simple to use and it works very well.  A lot of the free DVD to AVI/MPG/WMV programs on the net use AviSynth because it is so good at serving frames to an encoder.
