hey guys i have a little problem
the other day i kinda accidentally downloaded a virus to my computer.  at first there seemed to be no effect, so i was relieved and forgot about it.  but then the computer started to run verrry slowly.  i have constantly been running our macafee (or however its spelled) virus detector, and its has been scanning and deleting a lot of things.  i also uninstalled some things i never use (like BF2 ) and defragged the computer and deleted the cashe of temporary internet files.  the computer seems to be running fine right now, but it will sometimes be slow.
im just wondering if anyone knows of a good, reliable program that could check to see if there is still a virus, or to delete it if one is found

any ideas?

Did macaffee find something? try installing a trial virusscanner and let it do a complete system scan(with mcaffee turned off ofcourse, the two would start to bitch if they are running at the same time).

I recommend: NOD32

try running spybot and adaware also, they pick up things (spyware) that virus programs do not.  run them in safe mode.

I recommend: Not Norton AntiVirus. Besides, most free anti-virus software like the stuff mentioned above are probably better than Nortan anyways.

McAfee (yes it costs but it has been proven the best of the best) > Avast! > AVG > Other anti-virus software...

AVG fails at anti virus.

NOD32 and Kaspersky are the best.

If you want to be 100% certain your system is clean, there's only one way:

Reformat and re-install.

Anti-malware apps are only really useful as an early warning system - if you get an infected system, the only way to be sure you've killed every last instance of it is to nuke the mofo.

I use Avast, CCleaner, and Adaware. Mcafee blows, it never finds anything and its a resource hog

sweeeeeeeeeeet
i ran that program, and it was taking a looong ass time to scan, so i thought "great, its doing a good scan, i hope it gets everything."
apparently it finds something and says it must be deleted (or so my mom says, i wasnt there when it happened) and its deletes it and says to restart the computer
we restart, and windows loads, but as soon as i do anything it freezes. every time. no matter what it is. it freezes. i can open it in safe mode (like now), but its slow and shitty.
ughhhhhhhh
but yea, im planning on just taking it to the tech place at best buy and having them try to make a copy of our harddrive and put it on an extrenal one, then wiping the hard drive for this computer
then im just gonna start putting things back a little bit at a time, only stuff we want back on and only after we scan it to make sure it doesnt have a virus
sound like a plan??

yeah, sounds like a good plan, 'ranger - in fact, get the best buy peeps to virus scan the data for you, oh and whilst you're at it - get them to partition your HDD so that you can separate data from programs, then, if in the future, you get another virus that fucks things up again, you can just wipe and re-install the OS and programs without worrying about your data
