Currently running Vista with 2GB RAM, and now see how it eats ram (1.1GB on idle!) with all the prettyness, sidebar, dreamscene etc.

So, im thinking of getting an extra 2GB RAM to max me out to 4GB, just wondering... is it worth it? Will i notice the difference?

(BTW RAM would be PC2-6400, but i think my 2 sticks atm are PC2-5400 - Dell FTL. So my PC2-6400 would run at PC2-5400 speeds? And in that case might i just as well buy PC2-5400? And in that case is there a big difference between PC2-5400 and PC2-6400?)

So many questions... Whatca think?

if you have x64 (64-bit) 4GB is definately recommended.

even if you dont have vista 64, you'll still utilise up to 3.5gb. I'd recommend doing it.

do it, especially if your gaming, but make sure they are all the same speed.

I'd say "upgrade", you'll always notice the difference if you double your ram. Well, almost double your ram if you have 32-bit(it will "only" recognise 3.something RAM, only 64-bit will recognise >4GB ram.

yes.

just go with the 6400, it's just as expensive as 5400 ram. And if you have some spare money left in the future: swap the remaining 5400ram with 6400ram

super pi doesn't always work. but I can live with that. Everything else is good. And you can always use the compatibility mode if something fails

The great majority of them have been worked out. As everyone else stated, take advantage of the additional address space in 64 bit.

right now on new egg you can get 2 x 2gb chips for 100 bucks,  get sell your slower memory, also, upgrade to 64bit, if not your 4 gigs will only be 3.5 so make sure you reinstall your os to 64bit.

for a true DDR2 speed you want 6400 speed, 667mhz isnt twice the speed of ddr pc3200.

Now thats a good plan.

Just as a point of interest, ive heard the way 4GB RAM "works" in 32bit OSes, is that you get your 4GB and then take away anything else that has memory (eg a GFX card) and whats left is what the OS sees. So if you have an 8800GTX, you would see 4GB - 768MB of RAM, is that correct?

I did not notice any difference when going from 2 GB to 4 GB on Vista x64 Ultimate... But what I do know is that it now can stay performing the same always because I have 4GB. I mean speed is the same but it will stay the same unlike with 2 GB + Vista which fills up quickly and then leaves less room for other apps.

I went from 2gb to 4gb on 64bit Vista and loading times and exiting games was much faster.

There is no harm in adding more RAM and Vista likes its memory but I have 2GB at the moment on PC2-6400 and it isn't slow or anything. Up to yourself in the end I s'pose.

I have x64 Vista Ultimate and im upping from 3GB to 4GB...

I heard rumors about, "Pre-Fetch" Maybe someone else knows about it here. OR they already posted and im in such a rush I didnt notice it...

anywho, its probably the best, cheapest upgrade you can make... Rams getting really cheap compared to GFX cards and Processors and it makes a heck of a difference (Especially in Vista with all the visuals and processes) and still runs about 100$ for 2GB

no thats not right.  the way it works, 1GB is deticated to the kennel layer, then 2.5GB is for applications.  A 32bit OS doesn't read the remaining 512MB do to the way a 32bit os is coded.  It doesn't take full advantage of the extra buses going from the dimm slots to the cpu socket

it has nothing to do with how much video memory you have.

That's the RAM I have. I love it.

And with Vista, yes, there's some compatability issues, but not many. Some with drivers but those are being fixed.
