I'm in the exact same position. First of all you need to ask yourself how many years you are prepared to study/university for a new profession. of course it depends on how old you are. If you passed 40 it's not likely you'll spend 7-10 years studying for surgeon or some thing. Be realistic!

Then you sit down and list all the things in life that you like. And i mean everything! All from ice cream to sunsets. These things will give you a clue to what to aim for.

When you find out what profession you like, try and find out as much as possible about it. Visit a company, talk to people working with it or even better try to get a practicality/study employment for some time.

Then go for it! And be sure to have support from your relatives and friends. Because you'll need it.

I've been looking into the NZ Military. It's a career path I've often thought about, my only problem is is that it's a massive step, a step away fro everything I've gotten used to. I won't be seeing my old mates as much/hardly ever or my family - it's kind of scary for someone with such well-set roots.
If I did go into the Army my eventual goal would be to become a part of the NZSAS. I know I'd be capable and a hum-drum job in the Army isn't really what I'm after. I'd say if I went into the Army after two years I'd put myself up for selection.

Still, it's not the kind of life I pictured for myself. I haven't found anything I'm really passionate about, besides playing the Guitar, and unfortunatly the likelihood of that getting me anywhere is slim.

Serious crossroads right now. Thanks for the suggestions.

physics? astronomy? thats what i want to go into, its super neato or if u go get an engineering or science degree and then become a patent lawyer with your law degree...or did you not get your law degree? find something you like, maybe a tv person (commentator, news/weather man, porno director, etc.)

First, you seem to have above average creativity, but your own self-evaluation seems to suggest that you aren't at a level where you could make a living doing something like cartoons or music.

Second, you seem to be aspiring toward jobs that evoke power.

So, here are a few suggestions that involve both traits:

Children's entertainer ... don't laugh ... it is lucrative, but doesn't require extraordinary music skill (of course, you gotta like kids)
Political campaign consultant
Your country's version of America's FBI
