World opinion is divided on the importance of having a free press, according to a poll conducted for the BBC World Service.

BBC wrote:

Of those interviewed, 56% thought that freedom of the press was very important to ensure a free society.

But 40% said it was more important to maintain social harmony and peace, even if it meant curbing the press's freedom to report news truthfully.

Pollsters interviewed 11,344 people in 14 countries for the survey.

In most of the 14 countries surveyed, press freedom (including broadcasting) was considered more important than social stability.
And what about you?  Would you curb the freedom of the press in order to keep peace and social stability?

I'm not partial to living a lie. I'd rather have the truth, and I think the truth is a prerequisite for lasting social stability. No one likes being lied to, and nothing stays a secret forever.

It's the very first right our Founders put to paper. Fairly important.

Depends on what you mean by "free" press.  For example, if a newspaper managed to get hold of battle strategies and published them before they had been carried out it would obviously be very dangerous for our forces.  Likewise, although age isn't a factor (IMO) for crimes like murder, I think it would be harmful if the press were allowed to name minors for petty crimes.  I know we have laws currently that prevent these happening but I'm not sure what was being covered by the original question.

I think knowing is important. I also think you cant have a real long lasting stable country without it.

Press freedom. Social stability could mean everyone is obeying their totalitarian gov't in fear of them and their families being harmed or worse.

Sometimes Freedom of the Press goes too far. I dislike how much Influence the press has over the people and the government. How "free" are we? All the press have to do is make up some bullshit story and they can down an entire party. If a certain Media company doesn't like something, they can just trash it constantly and it is usually effective.

I want a free press. But I also want to see Editors get locked up or worse for lying.

Define what you mean by social stability, then I'll answer.
