when these scientist first set out to do this, what was "in the big picture". I mean the end goal, because the only thing I see them doing is wanting to do it to humans.

It's interesting step forward in understanding the laws of attraction
but a very touchy subject because if they find a way to do it to humans, it would cause a lot of "debate".

The fact that heterosexual folks move to homosexuality and vice versa would seem to contradict that.  The human mind and will are the most powerful forces on earth.

I wouldn't doubt that hormones have a significant impact on that and genes definitely have the ability to manipulate hormones.

I think that it's kind of both genetic and mental. If you don't want to be gay, you will deny it all your life, and try to be as heterosexual as you can, and force yourself to be attracted to the opposite sex.

Examples of homosexuality in the animal world would tend to favour the genetic argument, although humans being of freer will and self awareness can 'convince themselves' they're homosexual without actually being genetically totally homosexual. It's not a binary thing, as bisexuality would suggest.

Ok, for the benefit of those who obviously didn't read the article;

a) They changed sexuality of the flies, not the sex. The male flies were still male flies. Supposedly some reptiles and insects can spontaneously change their own sex though.

b) This didn't make them gay, it turned them bi. They responded to all flies the same way regardless of sex.
