Easy for England / Great Britain:

Imperialism, the colonies, The Raj etc.etc.

We were all powerful! Roman-style!

Edit:

Also, conversely, I'd say the worst period is anything after the 1940's: the birth of materialism, consumerism, and social stagnation.

WWII perhaps, or the Civil Rights movement.

WWII: We helped fellow nations defeat a maniacal dictator hell-bent on ruling Europe at the very least, and defeated the Japanese. At the same time, one could argue that thanks to WWII we had the cold war and other such arms races.

Civil Rights: People took to MAKING a change in the government, rather than just bitching about it, pursuing "life, liberty and happiness" as they say in the DoI.

Neither one is without its share of low points, especially WWII, but overall I think they both represent what the United States, or at least its founding documents, stands for.

From the 1950s through the 1960s.

Massive technology explosion that led to much of what we take for granted today (transistor, anyone?).

Civil Rights Movement.

Move toward equality in the workplace.

The Canada-Soviet Summit Series in 1972 is usually regarded as the greatest moment in Canadian history. Mind you, it was a legendary hockey tournament.

Oh, and a quick edit: I'm not joking.

1944 - today.

1944, when the Republic of Iceland was founded everything (well, most) went upwards and still is, as I stated in the other thread, UN lists us as #1 country to live in. Pretty well done, huh?

Or you could say 874 - 1000, the viking era.

Galipolli, best and most brave Australians our nation has produced.  Also Kokoda is pretty amazing, that a tiny number of Diggers managed to hold off the entire japanese invasion force chasing them across the most inhospitable terrain imaginable, and ended up saving Australia from invasion.

Kokoda, probably. Or Milne Bay.

The PNG campaign in general is probably the finest moment in australia's very short and rather bland history.

EDIT: Or maybe the Snowy Hydro, and related to that the removal of the White Australia policy (though not so much the best as removal of some of the worst)
