One thing to avoid would be genre confusion. Some people have been very touchy recently about genre classification. So I would suggest either very broad categories or very narrow ones. Considering the large effort of it, broad categories would suffice.
Subsequently, I would also advise that polls would be difficult. There are so very many bands to choose from, even with narrow genres, and it would be difficult to please everyone. While I share a dislike of the unorganized nature of posting to share favourite bands, it may be the best solution. However, it may be feasible to suggest a top three, or else their vote would be disqualified, to help the organizer get accurate results without ignorant posters giving long lists to satisfy their need to boast about their bands. A top three also would give the diversification needed to accurately find bands that are popular for everyone, even if they garner a second or third place in everyone's mind. That would help to avoid bands that find a great divide of hate and love between the populace in favour of bands that are universally popular.

Ok, you understand my concept, but not how I mean to get all of this information. I don't want polls, they are too restrictive. People will just post up in a topic I will make now, and then from that information, I will update the graph.

How about this idea. As the other idea doesn't seem to be working so well - people aren't exactly posting.
We have a site where you can input your favourite artists. Then you can tag those artists with the genres they belong in. Those genres get organised on the frontpage and we have a nice selection of the biggest BF2s music genres and the genres which have the most artists under it.
You will also be able to input info on each band and classifiy it into more than one genre if you wish. That band can also have albums if you wish to go into that depth.

I like it. As you probably noted on IRC earlier, I had forgotten several artists I forgot to mention - so a system like this would be very handy!
