LONDON (Reuters) - Hindus, Sikhs and Muslims joined Britain's equality watchdog on Monday in urging Britons to enjoy Christmas without worrying about offending non-Christians.

"It's time to stop being daft about Christmas. It's fine to celebrate and it's fine for Christ to be star of the show," said Trevor Phillips, chairman of the Equality and Human Rights Commission.

"Let's stop being silly about a Christian Christmas," he said, referring to a tendency to play down the traditional celebrations of the birth of Christ for fear of offending minorities in multicultural Britain.

Suicide bombings by British Islamists in July 2005 which killed 52 people in London have prompted much soul-searching about religion and integration in Britain, a debate that has been echoed across Europe.

The threat of radical Islam, highlighted by the London attacks, prompted reflection about Britain's attitude to ethnic minorities and debate about whether closer integration was more important than promoting multiculturalism.

Phillips, reflecting on media reports of schools scrapping nativity plays and local councils celebrating "Winterval" instead of Christmas, feared there might an underlying agenda -- using "this great holiday to fuel community tension."

So he joined forces with leaders of minority faiths to put out a blunt message to the politically correct -- Leave Christmas alone.

"Hindus celebrate Christmas too. It's a great holiday for everyone living in Britain," said Anil Bhanot, general secretary of the UK Hindu Council.

Sikh spokesman Indarjit Singh said: "Every year I am asked 'Do I object to the celebration of Christmas?' It's an absurd question. As ever, my family and I will send out our Christmas cards to our Christian friends and others."

Their sentiments were echoed by British Muslim leaders, who were also forthright last week in condemning Sudan for jailing a British teacher for letting her pupils name a teddy bear Mohammad.

Muslim Council of Britain spokesman Shayk Ibrahim Mogra said "To suggest celebrating Christmas and having decorations offends Muslims is absurd. Why can't we have more nativity scenes in Britain?"

More than 70 percent of Britons -- some 41 million -- said they were Christians, according to figures from the 2001 census.

Muslims were the largest religious group after Christians -- at the time there were 1.6 million Muslims in Britain, while there were over half a million Hindus and Sikhs numbered just over a third of a million.

no, i believe it...

consider this: my university's mascot, chief illiniwek, was banned for being racist.  almost immediately after the ban, the Illini tribe issued a public statement saying that the mascot was not considered offensive, and, in fact, they enjoyed the publicity it gained for their tribe.

the mascot remains banned...

Typically, the people who are offended do not speak for the majority, or even a significant percentage, of the population.

I don't know one Muslim that is offended by Christmas or has been in my 30 years in the UK.  Seriously, NO ONE complains when free holidays are provided.  When i was a kid Christmas at school was fucking good times!

I have no idea where these daft reports come from that Muslims/Hindus/sikhs have been offended, in fact i am inclined to think there are puked up by the like of the daily mail to encourage sales/rub people up the wrong way.

The issue in America has been the Aetheist, not the muslims or Jews, trying to hijack Christmas and turn it into a non-religous holiday.  I am all for people who are not Christians celebrating Christmas, but it is still Christmas.  If you want your own Holiday, pick one, don't take ours.

Anyone here want to buy a Holiday tree?

I never really understood why governments got all up in arms about it in the first place.  It's not like Jewish people are required to be PC about Haunauka or Muslims about Ramadan.

It is Christ's Mass after all.  So why should the idea of celebrating Christ during Christmas be though by anyone to be offensive to non-Christians.  It really boggles my mind sometimes how governments pander to the smallest of groups... those easily offended during secular holidays but do sweet shit all about the important stuff.

Fuck can't even say Merry Christmas in some places anymore?!?

Realisticly speaking though Christmas was never about Christ. No-one knows when he was born, it was just made that Christ's birthday should be December 25 because it coincided with a Pagan holiday and thus helped Christianity in merging and eventually wiping out Pagan religions.

QFT. I don't celebrate Christmas thinking about how Christ was born and how we should glorify him on that day. Because he wasn't born on that day, but if they don't know which day to celebrate it on I guess they just had to pick SOME day. So whatever right?

LONDON (Reuters) - Muslim Council of Britain spokesman Shayk Ibrahim Mogra said "To suggest celebrating Christmas and having decorations offends Muslims is absurd..."
But it does.

Yes it was. But you're right in one aspect: elements of pagan religion were added and merged into Christian festivities to ease transition of faith.

I think that it's misguided elements of the white middle class who make a fuss about political correctness - not the minorities.

It isn't the Muslims that are bothered about Christmas.  As m3thod says, I reckon it has a lot to do with shit stirring by certain Tabloids and to a less extent certain Broadsheets.

I think the government are also guilty however.  They overestimate how sensitive the Muslim community is and decide to impose words like 'Winterval' and discourage decorations that connote the religious side of Christmas.

All in all the Muslim community are made to look bad, because the general public think it's Muslims who demand the above measures.

yeah this stuff happens all the time.  I think people like to be offended.  It makes them feel like they're compassionate.

I, for one, stand firmly against political correctness because it is extremely manipulative.

on a similar note:

This past november on election day, our state (NJ) had on the ballot to change the wording of our constitution from "idiot or insane person" to "a person who has been adjudicated by a court of competent jurisdiction to lack the capacity to understand the act of voting"

wtf is that.  I voted against it.  If a person is an idiot, they're an idiot, no way around it.

I've been saying this for ages. It's so obvious that all this PC shit is infact being done on purpose to fuel tensions. It's almost a conspiracy, but not quite. Because this country's government is too stupid to make US style conspiracies.

This so called political correctness and minority pressure 'invading' the west is bullshit as far as I can see. I work for what is essentially an arm of the Irish government and we have a fucking nativity scene and Christmas tree at our reception desk - hardly shying away from our Christian origins.

He was believed to have been born in the summer. The whole story of Jesus is nicked from a Roman God, the whole messiah, born to a virgin, in a stable, 3 kings, ALL nicked.
