Same speeds, less Ram. I think they're a great alternative!

What's the point having the shiny effects if you lack the video memory? You need 512MBs to get the high quality effects that card's capable of.

Not really. If you're running on a 1024x768 monitor like me, and have no intention of upgrading to a 30" fuckoff monitor because 15" LCD is big enough for my desk, than this card would be awesome and would easily last more than a year. I laugh at idiots with massive monitors who have to waste even more money on bigger video cards.

I wish we could get a 8800GT 256MB for £100. Cheapest here is around £130. Whereas you can get a HD3850 for £90 or so. The difference isn't even that big, well...not enough to spend £40 more on. That £40 would be better off spent on booze or a game than increasing my FPS by 5 or 6.

you don't need a 30" monitor to need more than 256 of vram. i have a 17 @ 1280 x 1024 and many games use more than 256 with everything set to the max my card can handle.

I run 1024x768. Many games where they're very expansive require extra texture memory. Of course it's fine if you intend to run closed environment game like F.E.A.R. but as games seem to be shifting towards using better shader effects whilst making environments bigger, it's a wise move to get the extra video memory. As great as it is to save money, there comes a point where you're getting a bargain and getting "what you paid for", in other words maybe up to a year tops of life.

Not convinced, if you take the G80 640mb 8800 GTS vs the 320mb version, even on the high res, the benifit was minimal.  Besides, total RAM isnt exactly top of the list when it comes to what makes a card quick on any give game and set-up

Useless card tbh, better of with a 512MB 3870.

Far from top of the list, just saying that the way games seem to be shifting, pushing as much eye candy as possible into the biggest scene possible, it might be an idea to get video cards with larger memory. I haven't seen a need to get more than 256MBs in many years, this is the first time I would actually consider getting a video card for the larger video memory and not just the API upgrades, architecture upgrades, clocks, etc.
