Ok, so i wasn't sure if this should go here or "everything else" i figured it was somewhere in between. But, i found out today that someone has stolen my bank account details and gone on a spending spree in Italy. Luckily the bank pays it back, but I'm a tad lost on what to do. Obviously i will call the bank again but right now im getting through to the Indian call center. So should I assume they have all my details, credit cards, account numbers and sort codes and so on, not just my card details? I haven't even done Christmas shopping yet. Has anyone else been it this situation/knows what to do? I'm guessing close account, open new one, cancel credit card, cancel all Direct debits and if they got my details from online then that's all online details, eg. amazon and eBay etc? Any ideas?

Shitty dude. Definitely get them cancelled immediately. Your CC should be insured and as long as you have never given out your PIN# your bank account should be insured also.

Only advice which i am sure you have thought of is to not use internet for purchases unless neccessary. If you do use it make sure it is through a well reputed company. Ie: Paypal

I only ever use paypal when ordering online, unless it is direct from a global corporation like microsoft or EA games.

As a personal banker, I’ve dealt with this multiple times for my clients. Sounds like the thieves just accessed your bank account used the routing/ABA/SWIFT code and your bank account number, yes? If so, they may not have your credit card or debit card info. Just to be safe, yes, shut it down and get new stuff. The bank should have a security/fraud department to assist you. Any VISA card has zero liability for theft so you’d get your money back if that have that, but you still have to fill out paperwork to get a refund, which is annoying. Consider opening a separate account for online purchases that is separate from your regular account. That way if you happen to run into issues you don’t have to switch all those direct debits. Getting a new credit and/or debit card is typically very easy. Especially with fraud involved, most companies hop all over that to limit their liability, which is good for you.

I had that happen to my credit card. Twice. First, some asshole in France spent like $40 on my MasterCard, then some other ass hole (about 2 years later, new card) bought some used books and billed me from Boston, MA. I called the bank, and had the whole thing fixed without a problem.

Just call the bank, have your information handy, and shut down cards, etc...

For online purchases, use a credit card, NOT a debit card. A debit card means your money is being stolen, not just credit put on hold. You can always call the credit card company and contest every charge that was made, but I wouldn't want the stress of my bank account being emptied, and relying on the bank's good will to put it all back.

All of the suggestions here should work to your benefit.

This has happened to me before. Some asshat opened a WoW account with my credit card. (As a dedicated FPSer I find that offensive). Luckily I check my transactions online every day and had the card cancelled post haste!

One particular thing I would do... mostly because I'm paranoid, would be to call the credit burea.. IE Equifax or one any one of the three and put a watch on your credit. They will do it for a month for free I believe, and basically what it does is if you're identity happened to be stolen (which seems unlikely) any new credit cards opened in your name & social would first have to be cleared by you via phone call.

Not that I'm aware of, as of recent I'm unemployed(Interview for IT techy soon though at friends prov ) so the only time I've used my card is for a bit of food or drink here and there, no online shopping recently, so i guess it was either from one of those scanner on an ATM machine or someone outside my house in a van stealing all my shit through my wireless, but that's protected with WPA so i dunno. I think it's just a case of swapping everything over to a new account, which is an effort but worth it. Anyways, thanks for the feedback guys.

Consult with your bank first.

When you do that Cancel Credit cards, Bank accounts anything tied to the credit card.

Start a new bank account and like you said hopefully the bank will put everything in your new bank account if that is the way it goes.

I dont know him too well. Last time I saw him I was 8. I had it put in my credit report that I wasnt the person going by the false name and false DOB. I hope any credit company who does a check could see that I wasnt born in 1952.

I've read another story like that. Some mom stole her two childrens identities and rung up some rediculous amount of debt on credit cards in their names. The kicker was that they were about 8 and 10. The Mom went to prison, but the two kids are gonna have shitty credit from a time before they could even spell credit. Or shitty.

GunSlinger, I feel for you. Not only did he do it, but he did it while you were overseas. Thats just a kick in the crotch after a sucker punch to the chin.
