I have an Athlon 3500+ 64, 2gig ram, 2x160gb sata drives, 7600GTxxx, Audigy Platinum.

PC runs fine when doing anything else but when i go to copy a cd/dvd, whether it be copying disc to disc or just ripping (i only have one disc drive) my system very nearly falls over. I dont recall it doing this before, seems quite recent.

Any ideas what i can do to solve the issue?

Thanks x

Maybe the IDE controller is getting worn out?
The idea of any hi-fi system is to reproduce the source material as faithfully as possible, and to deliberately add distortion to everything you hear (due to amplifier deficiencies) because it sounds 'nice' is simply not high fidelity. If that is what you want to hear then there is no problem with that, but by adding so much additional material (by way of harmonics and intermodulation) you have a tailored sound system, not a hi-fi. - Rod Elliot, ESP

Make sure your CD/DVD player has the jumper set to Slave and your hDD to Master. Then check your BIOS and set you BOOT sequence to:
1. Floppy (even if you don't have oone)
2. HDD
3. CD/DVD player

No pun intended, but he did say that tis was a recent issue, and that he only has SATA HDDs.

Oh, and never run a CD/DVD unit on the same cable as a HDD, or you'll get ATA33 speeds on your HDD.

Rambo, just GTFO.

It's because of your processor.  It's old and slow, and it only has one core. Watch your CPU usage levels. I guarantee they will be high. There isn't much of a way to fix this.

Not any more.  Independent device timing has been supported by IDE controllers for many years now.  Each drive will operate at its rated speed, although I agree that it is better not to do it if it can be avoided.

To the OP, make sure your controller is set for DMA mode.  If for some reason it changed to PIO mode, that would really kill performance.  To do this go into Device Mangler, then open the listing for the IDE ATA/PATA controller.  Select the controller on which your CD drive is attached (primary or secondary), right click on it and select properties.  Then go into the Advanced Settings tab.  Make sure the Transfer Mode is set to "DMA if available".

If you can't do that, uninstall the controller and restart.
