The RIAA... and I'm sure the MPAA will follow suit... is saying that the mere act of ripping your own CDs to MP3 for personal use is copyright infringement: (http://recordingindustryvspeople.blogsp … ef-in.html)

We already know the MAFIAAs want fair use abolished and we know they're a huge lobby group on the hill (*cough DMCA cough*). Do you think there will come a time when a corporation or organization trying to buy its laws gets reigned in by the very government they pay to put those laws in place? And has this gone on for so long that consumers really have zero say in the matter anymore and pretty much just have to just "shut up and eat it"?

Can you be so sure... a lot of the people they sue just settle instead of going to court for fear of losing everything in lawyers fees or worse a judgment against them. So the MAFIAAs are making money, enough that they can and have outright bought continuing legislation to give them incredible freedom in legal la la land. It could go on for a while yet.

RIAA can tell that I'm not allowed to wipe my ass with their albums. Doesn't mean I won't do it, should the urge strike.

If you have a monopoly on a product and sell them with poor, underpackaged quality, people either going to:

a) steal from you
b) boycott your product

Either way, you lose business.

We're not entitled to it, far from it. I think what he's trying to say is that as long as there's a cheaper substitute good, consumers will always go for that instead of paying a full price of a product. It all depends on the opportunity cost of the situation. If it's easier and more worthwhile to download a good, because of higher quality over the internet, it is that, that consumers will choose. If it's easier and more worthwhile to buy the thing, that is what we will choose.

I'm interested in their legal definitions..specifically "how ripping a legally purchased cd into MP3 (et al) format" is illegal. While the CD (the plastic, the metal, the label, the digital content) becomes your physical property, how can they legislate what you do privately with it?

I can almost understand their angle of "reverse engineering" or otherwise "reproducing" content from it as being illegal...but if that content, however many times I choose to duplicate it, is still mine legally, then who are they to say if it's illegal? ...unless it is in another's possession.

Is it illegal to record music on the radio/satelite? If not, then it shouldn't be illegal to rip your own music. As for me, I will always and forever back up ANY music I buy onto my computer for reproduction of CDs that scratch and get destroyed..or just to make mixed CDs for the car. If I let those CDs out of my possession, then I will accept responsibility for them.

I hope a big enough revolt occurs that opens up new means to acquire music.

The most interesting part is that, although you shell out the X amount of dollars for the product, be it music or software, they feel they can still tell you what you can and can not do with it.

So, essentially, they're saying you own the physical CD or what not, but you are only renting the actual information on that CD. That is pretty deep down the stupid hole if you ask me.

And, on a side note, I had always figured the whole point of copyright was to keep people from profiting from your material, not just copying it. Yes they loose money from people copying it, but on a whole, there is no monetary transaction, so it isn't really copyright infringement, is it? I'm not saying its right, I just think they don't actually have a law against this, so they're using the closest thing they can find to try and plug the massive whole in their leaking piggy bank.

OK. So you think he made some sort of profound statement? I doubt it. He sounded like a child saying "gimme! gimme!". If we wants to edit photos, buy Photoshop, a cheaper competitor, or download Gimp.

People buy photoshop if their livelihood depends on it. Just like how people will buy Maya if they need it for their profession. Last I checked, Maya Unlimited costs $7000, artists still buy it if they need it. Even though Autodesk offers a free to download and use "Personal Learning Edition", people still feel entitled to the $7000 version.

That kid feels entitled to media for less than the cost. He could just (gasp!) not buy it.

Honestly, I won't claim I never used unlicensed software, but I don't think that I shouldn't pay for it. It's an attitude problem that this kid has, not some greater economic goal.

And for point of the article, the US needs to fortify fair use rights. You are allowed to make a copy of media for personal backup, BUT it is illegal by the DMCA to circumvent any encryption. That means that DVD's are uncopyable, technically. But how can the MPAA crack down on that? They can't if you don't distribute the copies.

The RIAA wants to make it so you can't space shift your media. That way, every time there is a new format, they can sell you the same thing over again. That was the old business model. Buy records, tapes, then CD's, all from the RIAA companies. Now they want to be the sole source of digital copies for your mp3 players, and it isn't happening. And they don't like it.
