I mean, really, how many super-skyscrapers can they build? It is phenomenal that a country has taken the steps to actually take on such a monumental task. Every single picture I see coming out of there is amazing. You have the Burj al Arab, the Burj Dubai, Dubai Towers 1 - 4, Pentominium, etc etc, coming soon, as well as the largest man-made island projects ever. What else could these people do to set the bar higher than they already have?

Well, there's always this:

Once done, I think this will possibly the most beautiful city/country in the world. Also, it'll have the highest apartment/office buildings/condos/hotel rooms to people in the world!

One problem on a documentary I saw.  Everything is damn near vacant.  Like the palm island.  They sold the properties, but it is like a ghost town.  I hope it works for them.

Possibly, their economy is purely captialistic, big business is whats fueling this.

The country is actually the UAE. Dubai is just the biggest city in it. Yeah, that place is really going forward. Probably the most westernised place in the Middle East. That and Sinai (Egypt, Sharm El Sheik etc.. )

Ah, didn't know Dubai was just a city in the UAE. Still, pretty cool. I'm wondering how they're supposed to fill all these rooms. I mean, every new tower has "the most luxurious rooms in the world". Gets a bit redundant.

I see a big problem.  Once Al-Q gets pissed that other Muslims are not living in caves and shitting in holes like they are, they might start launching attacks.  That would scare away western business and tourists.  I hope they have a plan for this.

Disaster is coming.  An earthquake or tsunami would all but annihilate all of it.  The maintenance required on the shoreline alone is enough to bankrupt a small country.

I don't know about you but I wouldn't set up shop in a hostile region.

At work and can't find it on google, but theee is a massive wind tower that has been designed which is higher than even that design.  It's for generating power, not living space, but it is amazing.

Dubai is diversifying as if their lives depend on it. They're very well aware that oil isn't infinite, and they have mind-bogglingly comprehensive plans to turn the entire region into a business hub of proportions not seen anywhere else. They seem to be succeeding, too.

Dubai is an emirate in the UAE. It's somewhat more like the United Kingdom than the United States in terms of independence.

QFT, The entire middle east economic structure is dependent on Oil, and the people and government of the U.A.E. know that it isn't going to last much longer.  by diving into the shipping and real-estate markets, they are ensuring that they will be the only ones left in 50 years, so yes, their lives may very well depend on it.

Isn't Halliburton moving there?  I remember something to that effect being criticized in that the move off shore would protect against auditing or other legal pursuit.

edit: yep, it's true.  maybe they'll take Dick with them.

Sadly, the tower in Chicago won't stand as tallest for too long. There are already other's in the works to finish well above 2000 feet, one will be in Dubai, as well.

The Burj Dubai is already halfway complete (or thereabouts) and will be taller than the spire. Gotta admit that Chicago building looks nice though.
