  • Is there any way to uninstall XP without reformatting?

Topic sais it all. I'm going to change my bed computer to a still horrifyingly outdated, but yet faster computer. I'm going to put this HDD in as a slave to the current 20GB drive in the "new" one. The thing is, that I don't want to format the 40GB drive in the old one, since I have lots of important stuff on it, and I don't want toe Windows folder taking up 2GB of it.

So, is there any way to completely uninstall Windows without reformatting?

(No, just deleting the folder won't work)
The idea of any hi-fi system is to reproduce the source material as faithfully as possible, and to deliberately add distortion to everything you hear (due to amplifier deficiencies) because it sounds 'nice' is simply not high fidelity. If that is what you want to hear then there is no problem with that, but by adding so much additional material (by way of harmonics and intermodulation) you have a tailored sound system, not a hi-fi. - Rod Elliot, ESP

what you could do is connect it up as a slave then just transfer what you want on to the master HD, then refomat ??

Nah, that'll take ages, and besides, 30GB data ain't gonna fit onto a 20GB drive.

You really think I pay for that stuff? Think again. I do make hundreds of euros when I sell it, though.

Oh, and I'd like to see a 40GB ATA133 hard drive in 1997.

Your only real viable option is to delete the windows and program files folders from the drive after you slave it.  Just make sure there isn't anything you really need in there.  Have FUN

Why cant you delete it?

I've put a junked old drive as a slave before and delete the old windows folder. It aint like there are magic runes to protect it (more than maybe a system or hidden attribute here-or-there that can be changed)

There are tons of hidden files that won't get deleted. Believe me - I've tried. And there's some flash extension that is protected by magic runes. I've tried under several OS' (Windows 2000, ME, XP, Ubuntu, Debian, RedHat), and it simply can't be deleted.

Restart, Boot to CD, install Windows, Leave File System Intact.

What an over the top solution to the problem. It is doable, as well as being fairly easy, but not formatting when you install XP is just asking for trouble. It is a very poor idea - and all for a meagre 30GB, just burn it to DVDs for fucks sake - only 3-4DLs (or 6-7 SLs) - that's by far the quickest easiest solution for you. Or plug another, less minute, drive on there and backup.

The whole idea of installing Windows without formatting horrifies me and is something you really, really shouldn't do.

Or just throw the system out of the window - it can't be worth more than £25.

First thing you may need to do is take ownership of all the files and change the premissiosn on them.  Make sure you force them down from the top and you should be good to go.

I sold a similar system, with an 1.4GHz P4, 512MB RAM, 20GB HDD and a 9200SE for 140€ last week. Those things go like butter in the butt of the goatse guy over here. People want something cheap for checking mail and stuff.

You do NOT have to format an XP drive if it is a slave and especially if you have another install of windows already on the "new" computer.  Vista yes as Vista can't be easily deleted without a format.

With XP all you need to do is browse to the drive, click once on the windows folder (make sure it is not the "new" drive!) and hold shift and press delete.  Say yes and you're done... the old windows is gone.  Then all you need to do is edit the boot ini to point to the proper HD.  Google it to find how, it's not difficult.

Now if you want to just migrate the old windows to the new windows that is pretty easy as well.  Just put the "new" drive in the old PC as a slave and use a partition copier program to copy the old drive.  Install into the "new" PC and run the windows setup off the CD.  Select to install windows, it should find a previous version already installed, choose to repair.  Done.

flash.jsp in system32\flash (I think) can't be deleted at all, I've tried everything. And there are tons of those incredibly hidden files that just won't be deleted. I once tried with an empty drive with just XP on, to delete C:\WINDOWS and all other folders. 500MB was still taken up, with all OS' set to show all files.

And repair installs will fuck up Windows Update.
