All right, so I need to build a Gauss gun for Physics. Any ideas/walkthroughs?
I know the basic design, but I want it to be electromagnetic, and have a fully automatic function. (that i've got figured)

I'm pretty sure they're very similar but work on slightly different mechanisms. I know one relies on a moving EM field while the other relies on polarity (or maybe they both do...)

Two different things.

Just looked those up, the concept is similar on both but simpler in application on the gauss.

Get some powerful capacitors. You will need to pulse a lot of energy through the coil, and that is the simplest way. BE CAREFULL! I'd hate to see someone killed by a capacitor discharging unexpectedly.

Google "coil gun" and you will get a few really good hits.

Make sure you shield the timing circuitry if you use more than one coil. A friend of mine neglected to, and now has to buy £60+ of chips every time he fires his 3-coil model.
And even on low power it drives a steel screw through a wall.

TSI, if you make a proper, tank demolishing, wall decimating rail gun, you'll need to replace the rails every few shots, or the projectile's going to fly off and kill someone (if it doesn't even when in normal use). Just what do you need it for?

Shit projects can have great ambitions...I have a friend whose engineering project was to design a camera that would function like a fly's eye...apparently the US military had spent a billion on a similar project...he got the docs done, 800 pages and hours+hours+hours of labwork done, only to have his professor refuse construction funding.

Yeah, its all in the magnets. Accelerate, then accelerate some more etc.

No, the polarity of an electromagnet is determined by the direction of the wrapping of the wire, these are both proven designs.

As far as I know the existence of single-pole magnets is still theoretical.
