I currently have a 7800 GT OC 256mb graphics card by BFG Tech, i think its over 1.5 years old (old in pc gfx card terms)

And for christmas im trying to get some money in order to step up to the DX10 level (got vista) for Crysis.
However currently, my processor, and my ram is at about 65-75% running crysis, but it still laggs. I think that its because of the 7800's 256mb ram and my 1440x900 resolution, I think its simply not enough...

So i was shopping around and picked out an EVGA Superclocked 8800 for about 400$, then newegg dropped that product and now i was looking at

then I saw the G92 thread, with a release like this it makes me feel as though theyre releasing the card purly for Something NEW. Not any significant advancement, I would consider a significant advancement 8800 to 9800

So this G92, its actually CHEAPER, but its new... I was glancing through an article on the specs... and I just saw some specs in which i didnt FULLY understand. So maybe you can help me clear some stuff up...

1. With only 512mb worth of memory, am I better off with a 1440x900 resolution getting the 640mb 8800 and not lagging out? Or with crysis possibly all on high, it wont need 512mb (estimated)

2. What are the major performance differences with the two cards, I mean I see the specs but what will the G92 do that the regular card (in the same 350-400 price range) cant?

3. The G92 definately looks smaller, sleeker, but someone said it was rediculiously long, what do you think on the design of the G92 and do you think that the new cards are simply, *new or just something to push out for christmas to get all the shoppers to buy something thats already out there?

First, how much ram do you have and what processor do you have?

1) http://www23.tomshardware.com/graphics_ … ;chart=277 Take a look at that benchmark (you can only compare the G92 8800 GT with the G80 8800 GTS 640 MB).  While video memory does play an important role, the G92 8800 has a new core and higher clock speeds.

2) The G92 8800 GTS will be better than the G92 8800 GT.  Again look at the benchmarks above or here <-- it basically says 8800 Ultra > 8800 GTS 512 > 8800 GTX > 8800 GT > 8800 GTS 640 > 8800 GTS 320

3) I just upgraded from my 7900 GT, I'm compulsive and couldn't wait any longer.  If you can wait it sounds like Q2 of next year a whole new architecture is coming out (not just these revisions)...

Notice the difference between the old 8800GTS 640 and the new 8800GTS 512.

Memory is only important when at high resolutions (not yours), and when comparing the same cores. Although the GTS 640 has more memory, its core is so much weaker it doesn't matter.

As for the next cards, February-March is when they are being released. I suggested waiting to the New Year, and buying then. Get an Evga, and you will be able to Step-up to these new cards at only the price difference.

ah yeah, im seeing it now... so basically the G92 8800GTS is > than the G92 8800 GT?

you said new core and higher clock speed, so this means that 512 in G92 is =or greater than the 640 G80 8800?

RAM= 3GB (soon to be 4 after C-Mas)
O/S: Windows Vista Ultimate x64
CPU: 3.01 GHz AMD Athlon Dual Core

and on the 1600x1200 the G92 was the 8800 GT and it scored like 95 compared to the TOP of the line at 121, I get that but it didnt beat out many 640's

This shows you even better.

The GTS 640 is a waste of money, and terrible compared to the G92's.

Remember, the difference between the two is that the GT has lower stock clocks, 112SPs and a worse cooling solution, while the GTS has higher clocks, 128SPs, and a dual slot solution.

In that article they said that the 512MB is equal to the old 640MB? I dont think anyones really answered the 1440x900 640mb >/< 512mb definitively

And they said that the card based on pure computational power has a tough time keeping up with the old? Wtf.?

Crysis. It is superior to the GTX in the end but its lead falls seriously as we move up in resolution and in filters. This is so pronounced that in 1280*1024 + antialiasing 4X and in 1600*1200 + antialiasing 4X, the GTX takes back the lead.
this isnt good, the only solution im seeing is a SLI, which I dont have the money for lol

Im really not seeing with all of theese benchmarks a, "Better" Card. Im just seeing another option on the market for low res, low filters

The speed difference there is not about the amount of RAM, it's about the memory bandwidth.  The new GT/GTS models have gone back to a 256-bit memory bus, which is why the memory amount dropped to 512MB.  The old GTS had a 320-bit bus, which is why it was available in 320MB and 640MB versions.  The GXT/Ultra have a 384-bit bus, which is why they are available with 768MB of RAM.

So your saying the only model theyll probably make that has a realistic market is the 512?

I may just heed nukchebi0's advice and just wait, my computer isnt broken so I dont really need a new card. It's probably just smart to wait.
