I have a friend who just put a system together and his motherboard board was DOA, and got an RMA.

He is second guessing getting the exact same one again and would like to see what is available for under $200 USD.

  • Motherboard and a video card (this current one had onboard video).
  • Not really a gamer, but needs to use dual monitors.
  • Needs to be compatible with this memory.
  • Under $200 USD.
  • Ideally not EVGA.

Any help will be greatly "k"appreciated!

Ummmmmmm... That's like 10 different kinds of RAM.

Please specify.
The idea of any hi-fi system is to reproduce the source material as faithfully as possible, and to deliberately add distortion to everything you hear (due to amplifier deficiencies) because it sounds 'nice' is simply not high fidelity. If that is what you want to hear then there is no problem with that, but by adding so much additional material (by way of harmonics and intermodulation) you have a tailored sound system, not a hi-fi. - Rod Elliot, ESP

That can't be the RAM he was trying. Maybe that's why the System wasn't working, you were trying to put SDRAM (laptop RAM) into a normal motherboard. That motherboard uses DDR2 RAM. Which you can get 2GB for really cheap (see Flaming_Maniacs topic)

It was this ram http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a … 6820145590 ( the link was messed up when you looked)
It did boot, twice. Once to watch temps, the second for memtest, which passed. That motherboard has a decent post indicator. I actually spoke to EVGA on the phone and dertmined might went wrong with the bios causing it to die.

So you are looking for a motherboard that is:
  • Compatible with DDR2 800 RAM
  • Socket LGA 775
  • Micro ATX form factor

right?

* Compatable with DDR2 800, specifically to have this ram http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a … 6820145590 in thier qualified list.

* Micro ATX or ATX

* Yes Socket LGA 775, processor is already in hand.

and your budget is <$200, ok

Top of the line: ABIT IP35 Pro
Midrange: GIGABYTE GA-G33M-DS2R

Search newegg. Read reviews on all the motherboards paying specific attention to why people gave them such a rating. Some people give 1 egg ratings to boards simply because they were colored funny. I personally like ASUS, ABIT, GIGABYTE, and MSI boards.

Absolutely I buy from newegg all the time, I was hoping to get some solid suggestion here first prior to doing my own searching.

The thing is this board he had gotten had video on it. What make it tough is that he is trying to find out i there is a motherboard and a video card (per the OP) he could get for under $200. Hopefully at lunch I convinced him to go a little higher.

Definately the best choice of card for around $100.

nice board, but the memory does not seem to be the comptability list.

Where is the compatability list?

if you look on newegg, look in the bottom left hand side for the "Manufacturer info" tab. then the "Manufacturer Product Page" link.

in this case from the mobo manuafacture page there is a link on the right that leads to http://www2.abit.com.tw/test-report/ip35_ip35-e.htm?2

Kinda silly, maybe he should just rma the memory as well rather than it driving board selection.

I'm looking at gigabyte and abits pages and they don't have that memory listed. It probably could be that they never tested that memory, it still could work on the board. I'd say give it a try.
